One of Mario’s matchups where he gets hard countered.
Snake takes neutral in this matchup. Cape doesn’t help against grenades (just like any reflector) because it doesn’t send them a far distance back to Snake unless they are thrown really far, and they clank with fireballs, stopping in there tracks and blowing up near Mario. This obviously forces Mario to approach, but he has a miserable time doing so. Mario’s Fair is a awful approaching move through the air, forcing him to awkwardly approach with Bair and he has to be very wary of landing due to Snake’s stage control as he’s open to Landmines, Grenades, C4 and dash attack. Even if Mario does get up close, however, Snake has a multitude or huge hitboxes that box Mario out. Mario has combos/juggling he can pull on Snake when he does get in, like up tilt and up air strings but landing them against Snake is a hard task, due to how well Snake keeps Mario out and how grenades can blow up Mario’s potential combos, thus destroying all his hard work getting in, giving him the point in damage racking. Snake’s endurance and hard to edgeguard recovery also give Mario a huge hard time KOing. Not only does he struggle to land his KO moves due to how well Snake boxes him out, but Mario’s edgeuarding doesn’t work reliably on Snake as FLUDD only pushes Snake up and Cape only slightly stopping his momentum in the air. The only way for Mario to take a stock because of this is through trying to Fair spike Snake, which is no easy tasks, especially against a Snake who knows what they are doing. Combine this with Snake’s excellent Momentum Cancelling and heavy weight, it won’t be uncommon to see Snake live to 180%. The insulting part is that all of this is the opposite for Snake, as he can edgetrap Mario and kill him early with his kill confirms and huge amounts of kill options. Mario does have a more developed air game than Snake, potentially playing with Snake’s weakness, but if Mario’s in the air, Snake just anti air’s him for days with u-tilt and u-smash.
So to conclude, this matchup is agonizing for Mario due to Snake’s better neutral, stage control, damage racking and KOing. Mario’s only strength being advantage state is completely destroyed due to how Snake has options to cover it while Mario has very few ways if not any ways to counter all of Snake’s strengths. Prime 2/8 matchup which means I vote 2/8.
