The first incarnation of the famous battle between the two PK kids. First thing to note before I start is both of them are victims of the 10 frame slower grab release. Ness wins in taking advantage of it, however, because he can do to Lucas what tons of characters can do to the both of them; grab, pummel, grab release and dash grab to start the cycle. Ness can do this across the stage and from there do whatever he pleases with the final grab. Lucas sadly can't take advantage of it as much as Ness can, only being able to grab release Ness into an f tilt for some damage. Ness also has the general advantage at mid range and up close. Due to having a better kit of aerials than Lucas and Lucas's zair not functioning like it does in other games, Ness is able to pressure him and wall him out completely with fair and nair, while being able to fast fall the fair into a potential grab. He also has magnet to respond to Lucas's PK Fire zoning from afar (which Lucas will be doing since he loses up close). Ness also has great ways of harassing Lucas's shield because like in Ultimate, Ness's down and up smashes have hitboxes while charging, which when combine with how poor Lucas's OOS game is great for him and his better frame data on his grounded moves allows him to whiff punish or just punish Lucas in general, which when talking about how much Ness gets off a grab from Lucas is huge. Ness also has tons of ways of finishing a stock, like grab release Lucas into an f tilt or his multitude of kill moves, while Lucas, like in a lot of matchups struggles to finish a stock, needing a grab to usually finish Ness off, like a grab release into f smash due to losing up close. Offstage is where Lucas wins however, as his recovery is hard for Ness to gimp due to being able to just use Magnet to absorb Ness's PK Thunder 1. Lucas also possesses a better recovery overall than Ness, and has multiple techniques like Zap Jump and his zair to dismay Ness's aerial attempts at edgeuarding and in return can easily gimp Ness with his own aerials, like a well timed Bair, Dair, PK Thunder 1 or edgehog.

So overall, Ness takes this matchup because of his better damage racking, up close and mid range combat tools (which include punish game, shield pressure and aerial fighting) and KOing. Lucas has a better offstage and edge guarding game, but it's not as huge as Ness's advantages still putting him at a disadvantage overall. It comes across as one of Ness's 6 best matchups and one of Lucas's many worse ones, making Ness victorious in the PK battle in Brawl. I vote 4/6.
