Like a lot of Mr. Game and Watch’s bad matchups, Link puts up a good fight against him because of his better neutral (Diddy, Marth and Toon Link for that matter). Link can zone G&W out with his projectiles, and because MG&W has no real ways of getting around them, his approach ends up being really hard. He can absorb Link’s bombs, however, Hero’s Bow and Gale Boomerang are better at camping than Chef as they are faster, travel more distance and aren’t affected by bucket. MG&W’s problems in neutral also don’t end there, as he ends up getting outranged by Link. MG&W is known for having large disjointed hitboxes, but the problems here is that they are close to his hurtbox, and Link can contest with that and outrange him because of this. So if MG&W is approaching through the air (which he will be doing a lot) Link’s great range on his titls/smashes are great anti air tools. It’s exactly the same thing as Marth, except MG&W doesn’t get harshly as punished for being outranged do to Link’s bellow average frame data. However, this is where the matchup takes a complete 180 and MG&W outperforms Link. MG&W edguards Link very well as he can edgehodge Link’s recovery and just as Link is coming in, punish with a bair which has a disjointed hotbox allowing it to beat Spin Attack. Link also has a horrible air game, while MG&W has one of the best as his aerials are faster, and his air speed and jumps are better. This obviously means he also getting outclassed offstage, in addition to MG&W edguarding him well. Like I said in the outrange part, MG&W also has better frame data and mobility on the ground than Link does, allowing him to easily weave in and out of Link’s range. Link does have more power, but MG&W has great power in his moves as well, and has great bucket braking skills that allow him to live longer, but the same can be said for Link as he great momentum cancelling skills. I still have to give killing to MG&W though as he doesn’t have to just kill Link onstage, as his great air game and edgugard give him the edge in that regard.

While Link does have a better neutral, MG&W can edeguard, outspeed and outperform Link in the air. Link’s greatest strength in his power is negated here, as MG&W has almost the same power and decent survivability. He mostly going to have to rely on playing bait and punish while forcing MG&W to approach him which he can do really well. But MG&w can contend with it pretty well, which is why the matchup is still in his favour. It comes across as a matchup being one of Link’s best high tier and one of MG&W’s worst in low tier. I vote 4/6.
