One of Diddy Kong’s two best matchups, and one of Samus’s 5 hard counters. While Samus has projectiles and a zair, Diddy takes neutral and mid range here because his Banana’s actually cancel Samus’s missles when thrown at them, not to mention he can just crouch walk under them. This will of course make Samus resort to trying to wall Diddy out with zair at mid range but he can just crouch walk under it, and if he has a banana, he can punish her landing or glide toss towards her, something she doesn’t want because she loses to him up close. A lot of the other characters who lose to Diddy can’t compete with his stage control, but at least can compete with him up close. She doesn’t have the tools to box him up close, as a lot of her moves have bad frame data and lack considerable range, so Diddy can easily punish her with a banana, severely hurting her damage racking and not to mention her KOing abilities because a lot of her moves are going to get stale. This of course forces her more to the ledge and the air, where Diddy’s strong aerial prowess screws her hard in that regard because she can’t get her usual Zair, fair and uair combos, not to mention deal with his high jumps and fair. Offstage Samus could potentially get an edge on Diddy horizontally, as Monkey Flip can get beaten out by charge shot and misses (homing are great) and if he air dodges the missles, she can setup bombs or go down to gimp him out of his up b but in return, his aerial prowess is great against her offstage, not to mention he can throw his banana’s down to gimp her out of her zair and her up b, timing an edgehog while doing so.
So while Samus can potentially take advantage of Diddy offstage, his ability to control the stage incredibly well barley gives her any time to breathe and play her usual defensive/long ranged playstyle, forcing her to fight up close where she has an extreme disadvantage, not to mention how he trounces her in other areas like damage racking, KOing, aerial combat and offstage. I vote 8/2.
