The newfound speed Bowser has gives him a slight advantage over Dedede. Bowser's jab combo and Up B are too quick for Dedede to combat directly

Dedede's multiple jumps and overall superior recovery coupled with the fact that he is third heaviest give lets him take full advantage of the rage mechanic. Bowser's Up B is a threat, but can be predictable and shielded through for easy grabs and guaranteed combos. Dedede has greater reach and a superior jab due to its varying utility in mix-ups and grab game as well as a low cooldown. Overall, while Dedede may have trouble approaching from above, Dedede is overall better at edgeguarding, which Bowser struggles to compete against. Dedede also possesses a safe offstage spike, where Bowser's is a suicide offstage. Both have suicide kill moves, though they are hard to survive and Bowser's is by far the easiest to execute correctly, Dedede is the only one with the possibility to recover on almost any stage, whereas the same cannot be said for Bowser in most cases. Dedede's superior range, edgeguarding, recovery, and utility of a long range, effective projectile (except in the case it's deflected by and attack, though it can easily be sent back by experienced Dededes) gives Dedede more options, and makes him the better character.
