By twisting your point entirely, you're the one who's reaching. At no point was it in question whether or not the franchises were as commercially successful during their presence on Nintendo consoles. So far, the requirements seem to be that 3rd-party characters must be negotiable, fit well in the franchise, BEEN ON Nintendo platforms, Sakurai isn't opposed to them, and most likely influenced by high popularity. Neither did Snake (MSX2). Neither did Sonic (Genesis). Neither did Pac-Man (arcade). Neither did Cloud (PSX, although Final Fantasy itself is deeply rooted in Nintendo history). Neither did Ryu (arcade). Hell, I'm probably missing somebody. Anyway, it clearly isn't a prerequisite, so I don't see what the problem is.

How people still don't realize that these two have been multiplatform for nearly 20 years is beyond me. I would 100% welcome either one, but preferably both. They were a huge part of my childhood, and would make for a great surprise reveal to generate hype. (............what if Spyro hasn't been announced on Switch yet to save it for a simultaneous Smash reveal???)
