Tekken apparently holds the Guinness World Record for longest-running video game storyline which surprised even Katsuhiro Harada

When we think about fighting games, their stories are normally not something that often comes to mind first, but it seems one series at least has managed to achieve accolades for its narrative that no other genre has.

The Tekken series apparently holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-running, cohesive storyline in all of video games according to longtime director Katsuhiro Harada.

Katsuhiro Harada planned to end Tekken 7 support after Season 2, here's how the community changed that

Tekken 7 launched in arcades clear back in 2015, but despite being nearly six years old, it still boasts a surprising amount of momentum. The game dropped on consoles a whole two years later, has seen three seasons of DLC content with a fourth on the horizon, and recently crossed the 6 million units sold mark.

During his recent interview with 876TV, Bandai Namco General Manager, Katsuhiro Harada, admitted that he didn't originally have plans to support the game beyond its second season.

Harada: We are currently working on an update to improve Tekken 7's online experience

Fighting game culture emerged in a very different setting than where it primarily exists today. Players were initially restricted to the in-person arcade environment and eventually were able to enjoy competition with friends at home, but online play has taken off in more recent years and has become all but a non-negotiable for users.

This heightened standard for online experience rocked many fighting game developers who, until fairly recently, were not prioritizing it. Bandai Namco's General Manager and the main face of the Tekken franchise, Katsuhiro Harada, has been making efforts to make network play as smooth as possible in Tekken 7, and according to a recent interview with 876TV, those efforts are not over with.

NieR: Automata's 2B was initially planned as a guest character for Tekken 7

NieR: Automata ended up being one of the surprise smash hits of the last console generation thanks to its engaging combat, rich plot threads and immediately recognizable characters led by 2B.

The protagonist got so big that she became one of the first DLC characters added to Soul Calibur 6, but there was apparently a time when she was first being worked on as a guest fighter for Tekken 7.

The dangers of artificially closing the skill gap in fighting games

With the much anticipated refresh of the New Year we're heading into 2021 with our eyes on the horizon. We're expecting Guilty Gear Strive to drop this year and have our suspicions that we'll be hearing about other major fighting game franchise entries sometime in the span of the next 12 months.

With this in mind we're revisiting the touchy topic of developers designing fighting games to be more accessible to newer players. There are extremely important do's and don'ts when it comes to accessibility, and artificially cinching the skill gap is absolutely a don't.

Tekken 7 has been in the hands of the public since early 2015 and has since gone on to be very successful for Bandai Namco. The era of delay-based netcode may finally be over for good in fighting games depending on what SNK does with The King of Fighters 15

The father of rollback netcode, GGPO, first debuted back in 2006 to show the world a widely better way to play fighting games online, but even as soon as this year, developers have continued to use their older delay-based solutions to the disappointment of many players.

Much of that has started to shift over the past two or three years, however, and now the fighting game community is looking at a potential / probable timeline where no new title is made with delay-based networking ever again — though that kinda hinges on what SNK is planning to do with The King of Fighters 15.
