Third Strike player pulls off about 99% of EVO Moment 37 in Grand Finals of tournament, then the saddest thing in the world happens

Even gamers who don't specialize in fighting games will often recognize EVO Moment 37, (a legendary 2004 sequence wherein RB|Daigo Umehara successfully parried the entirety of Justin Wong's Chun-Li Super to avoid chip damage, and then punished with a game-winning combo) and our genre's most famous in-game exchange was almost recreated in a more recent tournament set.

The event was Heaven or Hell 2019, a Brazilian competition held in November of last year. The Third Strike tournament had been whittled down to just two remaining players: Saoparry|Mardico, who used Chun-Li, and PRTCK|JuanGuitar, who used Ken.

Masahiro Sakurai's specialized developer screenshots for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate feature a ton of neat fighting game references like EVO moment 37

Super Smash Bros. as a series combines characters from pretty much every major genre the video gaming space has to offer, but the influence of traditional fighting games has become more ingrained into its latest iterations with the addition of characters like Ryu, Ken and Terry Bogard.

Masahiro Sakurai, the longtime director of the series, began sharing daily developer screenshots from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's development, and one thing that stood out in particular among them is how many fighting game nods and references there are among them.

Tool-assisted Ryu vs. Akuma in Street Fighter 3: Third Strike makes their battle as crazy as we always imagined in our heads

Street Fighter 3: Third Strike lives on as the most technically intensive game in the entire series, but what happens when the limitations of human input and reaction are completely removed from the equation?

Well, you could end up with a wild tool-assisted gameplay set between Ryu and Akuma that makes their clash look more like an anime battle than a fighting game.

Third Strike has been making a comeback in America thanks to the Jazzy Circuit and this brand new documentary shows us how

Fighting game fans would do best to make sure they have a full 36 minutes and 27 seconds of uninterrupted time to spare before starting Jazzy NYC '19 as it will immediately wrap you in and won't let go for its full duration.

The brand new documentary from Phil Nolan examines the latest Third Strike resurgence in America that seems to have come about thanks to Capcom's 2018 re-release of 3S on the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection as well as the community-based efforts to put on the Jazzy Circuit.

Lovely fighting game art from Osanpogakari

I'll admit it, I saw Osanpogakari's Gouken piece and immediately hoped the Japanese artist had enough fighting game figures to make into a full gallery.

Clearly the answer to that was "yes," even if there's a particular favor to the twins, Yun and Yang. Be that as it may, I'll post a few Yuns if it means the old man can get some screen time, plus the fact that all of these are downright beautiful helps as well.

Gootecks' idea for community funded and run online tournaments may be the key to success for network fighting game competition in 2020

One of the most innovative minds in the fighting game community belongs to Cross Counter's Ryan "Gootecks" Gutierrez. The Excellent Adventurer seems to always have his sights set on the horizon, ready to dive into the next fighting game venture and put his unique mark on it.

I was fortunate to be able to spend some time with Gootecks over Capcom Cup weekend and had a few conversations about one of his latest endeavors: the online fighting game space. I've voiced my hesitations for us to explore this space before connections catch up to the generally precise requirements of fighters, but Gootecks feels the time for action is already here.

Cross Counter has a vision for online fighting game tournaments that doesn't aim to recreate the experience one might get at something like a Capcom Pro Tour event. Instead, they're trying to meet people where they're at and give them what they might be looking for online: a lower-stakes way to compete for a few extra bucks.

How well does Street Fighter 5's roster represent the franchise as a whole? Let's have a look at how many returnees each past game got in SF5

With the release of Seth last week for Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition, we've got a pretty well-rounded roster at 40 characters, just 4 short of the number the Street Fighter 4 series eventually ended on. Although we don't actually know if Seth will be the final character for the game or not, Season 4's addition of boss characters throughout the franchise seemed like a good opportunity to have a look at how many characters from each part of Street Fighter's history returned.

We'll be looking at Street Fighter 1, the Street Fighter 2 series, the Street Fighter Alpha games, the Street Fighter 3 titles and finally the Street Fighter 4 installments and detail each character who originated in these respective parts of Street Fighter history that returned in Street Fighter 5, and look briefly at the ones who didn't as well. So, let's get started.

Who is Gill and how does he factor into Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition's story? Here's what we know so far

The big boss of Street Fighter 3 is en route to Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition as Gill has been revealed as the game's 39th character. Franchise fans will almost certainly have heard of the messianic baddie, but many may not be aware of the particulars of his general story.

We thought it would be interesting to recap who Gill is in the Street Fighter realm and take a specific look at how he seems to fit in Street Fighter 5's arc. A bit of a caveat before we begin, this is not a series known for consistent nor coherent storylines, so we go into this some pretty tempered expectations when it comes to motivating factors.

Justin Wong creates Street Fighter 3 Third Strike tier list here in 2019

If Justin Wong were placed on a tier list for creating tier lists, he'd be the best in the game. The long-time fighting game legend has created tier lists for all kinds of things, from fighting games to fast food restaurants.

Just last week, the accomplished fighting gamer put together a video in which he constructed a tier list for Street Fighter 3 Third Strike. As easily one of the best and most memorable Third Strike players to ever compete, seeing where Justin places each character here in 2019 is definitely interesting.

Clashing Raging Demons, Rolento's suicide and more; Desk shows off some of the coolest unique animations from older Capcom fighting titles

The lastest venture from Desk doesn't feature crazy combos nor game-breaking bugs but instead acknowledges the many times Capcom went above and beyond to add little Easter eggs to a handful of their older games.

In titles like Street Fighter Alpha, Capcom vs. SNK, and Street Fighter 3, developers snuck in a ton of cameos, references, and special animations that would only trigger if certain conditions were met. Some of them were particularly clever, and will no doubt bring a smile to your face.

Side by side footage of Gill in Street Fighter 3 vs. Street Fighter 5 shows what has and hasn't changed over the last 22 years

It was back in 1997 that we first met Gill, the leader of Street Fighter lore's Secret Society. Players were only able to access this character by successfully scaling the arcade ladder and countless hours of frustrating losses led to Gill garnering a reputation as one of the most difficult boss characters around.

Here we are, 22 years later, getting our second real go around (he did have a cameo in Capcom Fighting Evolution) with Gill as he's been announced for Street Fighter 5. How much has he changed in that time? HiFight offers an answer with his latest video.

You need more of Kanzukiryuu's art in your life

We featured the work of Chilean artist and FGC diehard Andres "Kanzukiryuu" Blanco in a post about one of Justin Wong's wedding gifts a few days back. Seeing just a sample of Blanco's art had us coming back for more.

We were able to round up a gallery of fighting game characters from both Street Fighter and Samurai Shodown, and have been absolutely blown away by these gorgeous digital doodles.

Capcom's fighting game endeavors have been far from perfect this generation, but Street Fighter 5 still continues to see positive traction almost four years after its initial release.

The developer / publisher recently updated their Platinum Titles web page, which ranks all of Capcom's games that have sold more than a million copies, revealing SF5 has reached 3.9 million sales worldwide as of September 30, 2019. Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, Ultra Street Fighter 4 and Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection saw their numbers bump up as well.
