You can check out the final poll numbers in the original story below and see how close some of the rankings are.

It's kinda hard to believe, but the next generation of consoles is no longer on the horizon. The Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will be here in just a few short days.

Though many players will be looking forward with what's about to come, it's also a great time to reflect on the fighting games that defined the eighth generation these past seven years from Killer Instinct to Granblue Fantasy: Versus.

Samurai Shodown will be getting a Last Blade character as a guest — Who are some cool candidates we'd love to see join the fight?

With a third season confirmed and coming up for Samurai Shodown, people have obviously been excited to see what's coming up next for SNK's swordfighting simulator, especially since there are still many good old cast members from the series that haven't made the cut for the current title's roster yet. However, at the end of last month, we were hit with a surprise announcement from the game's director Hayato Konya that the next fighter joining Samurai Shodown will actually be a guest character from a different SNK franchise. As you may expect when hearing such news, the other SNK franchise is the beloved yet not as well-known The Last Blade, a separate weapon-based fighting game from SNK which saw two installments released in 1997 and 1998, respectively.

As such, it's obviously been quite some time since we saw a Last Blade character in action in a new game, and this will be the first time they're rendered in 3D for a fighting game. The cast of The Last Blade is quite varied with a lot of interesting characters, so I decided to revisit The Last Blade 2 this week and take a look at which one stick out to me as particularly good candidates for Samurai Shodown's third season. To be clear, this is a situation where I basically don't think there's any wrong answer no matter who you end up choosing — but here are the ones I feel the most strongly about.

Samurai Shodown continues to be one of the best fighting games SNK's released in modern times — minus the netcode — and soon players will be able to enjoy the hard-hitting action on brand new hardware.

During the first day of Tokyo Game Show Online 2020 this morning, SNK revealed that Samurai Shodown will be making its way to the Xbox Series X and Series S as one of the very few fighting games to make the jump so far.

AnimEVO 2020 results

Update: This story has been updated with final results for all four weeks of competition.

While there obviously won't be any official EVO event this year due to serious allegations surfacing, it must be stressed that AnimEVO has no affiliation with the official event and will be proceeding as usual, putting the spotlight on games that don't always get to shine as much as they deserve.

The game list for this event is absolutely massive and will be detailed further below — but a lot of games are going to get their time to shine throughout August as AnimEVO proceeds throughout the entire month with a dedicated schedule for each weekend, so make sure you don't miss your favorite games being played by referring to the official site.

Wan-Fu was originally planned for Samurai Shodown's base roster but was switched with Shiki when SNK realized that there were too many 'old, bald men'

During the Japan Fighting Game Publishers Roundtable, developers revealed their roster selection process. Eventually, SNK was provided the opportunity to speak about Samurai Shodown's characters.

Interestingly enough, Shiki was originally planned to be a DLC fighter instead of being present on the base roster. She ended up replacing a character that was later released as part of the first season pass.

If Samurai Shodown is going to keep adding guest characters, there's one franchise they have intricate ties to which needs to be brought in...

Samurai Shodown released during last year's summer and has been quite diligent in delivering post-launch content with as many as 10 characters being added to the game's roster just over a year after it's release. The first DLC season contained beloved Samurai Shodown veterans Rimururu, Basara the Executioner, Kazuki Kazama and Wan-Fu while also releasing Samurai Shodown III protagonist Shizumaru Hisame during the same period completely free of charge for all users. The second season started off along the same lines by bringing back the two top placers in the DLC poll with Mina Majikina and Iroha as well as a lower placer but still popular and enduring favorite Sogetsu Kazama. After that, we started receiving much more unexpected picks as SNK veered into crossover territory with the Warden from For Honor and the, much like Shizumaru, completely free-of-charge addition of Gongsun Li from Honor of Kings.

At the Japan Fighting Game Publishers Roundtable earlier this month, we got verbal confirmation that Samurai Shodown is getting a third season of post-launch content. It's pretty obvious that we have more classic characters from the series coming up since it has an incredible wealth of characters and some very popular and iconic picks are still missing, but it's also clear that now that SNK have dipped their toes in the crossover realm for this game, it's not out of the question — in fact, I'd call it fairly likely — that we'll be seeing more guests join the roster as well. For anyone who's been a longtime Samurai Shodown fan, there's a certain franchise that just screams crossover potential with the series, and it has a long and storied history alongside Samurai Shodown as well...

With Samurai Shodown's third season coming our way, which five classic characters seem the most likely to return to the new roster?

Some great news we got from SNK the other week during the Japan Fighting Game Publisher's Roundtable was that a third season is under development for their latest big release, last year's Samurai Shodown revival. While this wasn't too much of a surprise given the recent release of guest character Gongsun Li from Honor of Kings free of charge, it was very nice to get confirmation straight from the horse's mouth.

The first and the second seasons have seen five characters each released, although each of them has had one for free — Samurai Shodown III's Shizumaru Hisame in September of last year and the aforementioned guest character Gongsun Li just about two weeks ago — thus making them an out-of-season character since they're not part of any pass and freely available to anyone who owns the game. With this in mind, I'm going to take a look at five characters from Samurai Shodown's past who should be a top priority to bring back and who will hopefully be making a return during this third sesaon.

Gongsun Li players will need to master unarmed battle as well as traditional weapon-wielding to truly shine in Samurai Shodown — EventHubs impressions

After the second season of post-launch downloadable content finished up for Samurai Shodown with the addition of the Warden from Ubisoft's For Honor, there wasn't really any telling what was next for SNK's swashbuckling swordfighting simulator, and fans were at something of a loss on what to expect, if anything at all, from it in the future.

It didn't take long, though, before we got our very next announcement, which was yet another guest character who was probably even more unexpected than the last one — and completely free of charge. Gongsun Li, from the Chinese MOBA game Honor of Kings, was announced to join the fray. Given that very few people outside of her home country know anything about the character, it was even more difficult to know what to expect from her, but now that she's been officially released to the public I've spent a few hours with her and will be bringing you my personal impressions and observations on the character from playing both as her and against her.

The King of Fighters R-2 and Samurai Shodown! 2 are now available to download digitally on the Nintendo Switch as part of the NeoGeo Pocket Color Selection.

The Japan Fighting Game Publishers Roundtable was a big step forward but had problems which could be ironed out in the future

Longtime Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada and Bandai Namco certainly deserve props for organizing an event which saw representatives from Capcom, Arc System Works, Koei Tecmo, Arika and SNK all come together to answer fan questions and reveal what's in store for their games including Street Fighter 5, Samurai Shodown, Soul Calibur 6, Guilty Gear Strive and even Fighting EX Layer.

The Japan Fighting Game Publishers Roundtable brought every single one of the country's big fighting game developers into one digital room publicly which ended up as quite the success story despite some of the glaring flaws present in their initial meeting.
