70 percent health gone in the first second of the set: AbaO's huge read at EVO Japan is one of the reasons I love Samurai Shodown

Samurai Shodown is the most "old school" of the new, major fighting games on the block with so much emphasis put on learning your opponent's mindset and tendencies combined with the ability to absolutely decimate pretty much anyone with the correct read or reaction.

KROne|AbaO and Teru's top 8 set of SamSho at EVO Japan 2020 this weekend started in literally the most explosive way it could with 70 percent of the Haohmaru's health cut away before the timer could even reach 58 seconds left — and it's pretty glorious.

Samurai Shodown Season 2 trailer shows gameplay for Mina Majikina and Sogetsu Kazama, also reveals Iroha as this season's third character

After the top 8 of Samurai Shodown wrapped at EVO Japan 2020, we were treated to something special by SNK.

Although it had been announced way back at EVO 2019 a number of months ago that Mina Majikina would be joining the Samurai Shodown roster with its second season, this is where we finally got our first glimpse at her gameplay.

That wasn't all, though. The trailer also showed us the previously leaked Sogetsu Kazama, and unveiled that the third character of next season will be Iroha. You can find images from the video below.

Haohmaru trailer released for Soul Calibur 6

After the spectacular top 8 of Soul Calibur 6 on EVO Japan 2020's main stage, we were treated to some new information from the game's producer Motohiro Okubo.

While he said that they're still working hard on developing guest character Haohmaru from Samurai Shodown and that they're going to need some more time before he's ready to release, he didn't leave us with nothing. Before leaving the stage, a trailer started showing the iconic samurai going up against Soul Calibur's very own poster boy ronin, Mitsurugi.

You can find images from the trailer below.

Winner of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at EVO Japan 2020 will only receive special controller, other games' grand prizes range from $4,500-$9,000

The prize money and supplementary prizes have been outlined for EVO Japan 2020's main stage games. No matter how well players perform at the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate event that will be held there, it's likely that everyone there will be competing at a loss of expenditures.

Funnily enough, it's been revealed that first place will receive a Nintendo Switch Pro controller. Don't worry though — a golden Smash mark is included on the controller.

Two players have intense staredown during Samurai Shodown match for 30 seconds until commentators notice that it's actually a controller issue

Fighting games are often described as mental chess games mixed with physical execution, and last year's Samurai Shodown game encapsulates that idea considering that just one wrong move can cost a player the entire round no matter how much health they have left on their gauge.

During their deciding match of top 16 at Frosty Faustings last night, Guzman and SpaceDetectiveKH start the first round of SamSho as usual before backing off and getting into what appears to be an intense mind game of who is going to make a move first.

Except, that's not what was really going on... and it took nearly everyone almost the entire round to figure it out that wasn't really a staredown in front of them, leading to one of the best tournament clips of the year thus far.

Update: Samurai Shodown's western release date for the Nintendo Switch version set for February 25, NeoGeo Limited Edition detailed

Update: It appears as though the previously reported western release date for Samurai Shodown's Nintendo Switch port has been confirmed for February 25, 2020 by way of Nintendo's official eShop listing — it's also currently on sale for $5 off. Meanwhile the PC version of the fighting game has yet to receive an updated release window.

SNK released Samurai Shodown pretty much at the same time around the world for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players, but that hasn't been the case for people waiting to take it out on the Nintendo Switch.

Japanese players just saw the Switch version launch last week, but the North American and European have been left with a vague quarter one 2020 window for a while — until now apparently.

GameStop's listing for Samurai Shodown on Nintendo's hybrid console currently shows a specific release date of February 25, 2020, which doesn't seem to be a placeholder.

Samurai Shodown is the EventHubs community's best fighting game of 2019

Update: The results are in for what you all thought the best new fighting game of 2019 was, and Samurai Shodown topped the rankings taking in nearly 50 percent of the overall vote. You can check out the full results below.

Earlier:There's less than one week left in the entire decade, and though we've previously covered the best and most important fighting games of the past 10 years, it's time we take a closer look at the ones which came out in 2019.

This year may not have seen a new Street Fighter or Tekken game hit the market, but we did get a sales juggernaut in Mortal Kombat 11, the return of a beloved SNK franchise with Samurai Shodown, a nostalgia trip of a 3v3 fighter in Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid and so much more.
