On October 8, 1992, the first Mortal Kombat's arrival changed the world forever with its copious amounts of violence, memorable characters, jank but fun action, tons of secrets and of course plenty of controversy.
30 years later, series co-creator Ed Boon sat down with the PlayStation Blog to discuss Mortal Kombat's 30th anniversary, what it was like seeing Street Fighter 2 for the first time and the present and future of fighting games.
I still vividly remember being in first grade and having my fourth grade tutor tell me about "the blood code" for Mortal Kombat 1. I excitedly committed it to memory, repeating both the sequence "A, B, X, Y, B, A, Y" in my head as well as mimicking the button presses on the Super Nintendo controller.
Long story short, there was no blood code for Mortal Kombat 1 on the SNES, as Nintendo had major trepidation about featuring too much violence at the time, but lo and behold, there technically was a bloodier and more expansive version of MK1: Mortal Kombat Nitro. Only two copies were ever made, but the story, as recently told by David L. Craddock and shared on IGN, is quite interesting.
Fighting game fans have been eagerly waiting to see NetherRealm Studios' next title that'll follow up Mortal Kombat 11 for over a year now and looks like they know what the project won't be.
Mortal Kombat Co-creator Ed Boon recently shared a message to fans regarding the next NRS game announcement and how it won't be connected to MK's 30th anniversary this year.
NBA Jam remains a special piece of video game and arcade history that's never really been replicated to the same level as the 1993 original, especially for Midway and Mortal Kombat fans.
Combo maestro Desk is stepping away from his usual jam session with his latest video exploring the hidden Mortal Kombat characters and references hiding within NBA Jam.
Those of us old enough to remember seeing Mortal Kombat 3 games first pop up in arcades might still recall the double takes we had to do when we first realized characters were legitimately running across the screen to pummel one another with brutal combos.
The run mechanic would go on to be included in most all MK3 updates as well as Mortal Kombat 4, but apparently didn't quite fit the mold Midway wanted to take things in, and has been gone for more than two decades now. However, someone has modded running into Mortal Kombat 11, and we have footage of it in action.
It's been over a year since it was announced that post-launch development for Mortal Kombat 11 wrapped up and that NetherRealm Studios had moved on to their next project. Oddly though, we've yet to receive an official announcement on what this "next project" is, but there have been plenty of rumors circulating on what it could be.
Though Ed Boon, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat series and Creative Director at NetherRealm Studios, has been rather tightlipped about the mysterious project, he recently hosted a couple of "Ask Me Anything" (or more specifically, "Ask Me Stuff") sessions on Twitter in which questions about the next project were asked several times. It's a bit of a longshot, but it's possible that some clues about what it is could be derived from Boon's words.
Mortal Kombat fans are somewhat patiently waiting for the next big franchise entry, but series co-creator John Tobias is helping people pass the time by taking a nostalgic trip back to the original and sharing some awesome behind the scenes information.
Tobias recently took to Twitter to share things like the very first dragon logo sketch he made, why he almost scrapped it at one point, the Queen song the franchise was almost named after, and more.

We haven't heard anything on the NetherRealm Studios front in a while, and though fans are hoping that a Mortal Kombat 12 is coming soon, we still don't have anything concrete on that front at this point in time.
But not to worry, as Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate is still here and is still one of the best looking games around. It's been a while since we've seen what TQT has been up to, but the virtual photographer has continued to produce amazing artistic MK11 screenshots for fans to enjoy. Today's stars of the show are none other than Mortal Kombat's classic ninjas.
The copious amounts of blood and guts have obviously been the main attention grabber of Mortal Kombat's Fatalities for 30 years now, but there's a lot more that goes into making those finishers as painful or goofy as they are.
Getting the voice actors to portray the shock, horror and pain of their characters getting torn apart is another of those big selling points that's often overlooked. Watching them try to record those screams and random noises in the studio, however, is comedy gold.
Injustice: Gods Among Us was first released on April 16, 2013. In many ways, the Injustice series could be thought of as a Mortal Kombat game, but with DC characters. While this isn't a one-to-one analogy, it does make sense considering how NetherRealm Studios develops both Mortal Kombat and Injustice.
But what if the Injustice series began in the 90s, just like with Mortal Kombat? Flavio Luccisano, a freelance artist and fan of NetherRealm Studios games, recently depicted what this would be like.

It's been over a year since NetherRealm Studios announced the conclusion of their post-launch support for Mortal Kombat 11. With that announcement, it was also confirmed that NetherRealm Studios had moved on to their next project. Since then, we've heard basically nothing in regards to what that project actually is.
Ed Boon, Chief Creative Officer of NetherRealm Studios, recently hosted a very interesting poll on Twitter. "What do YOU want to see from NetherRealm studios next?" asked Boon of fans in this poll.
The new version of the old Last of Us (Last of Us: Part 1) has been out for a week now, and as fans have been visually scouring every nook and cranny of the experience to see just how many more pixels of definition are present, they've also spotted a newly inserted Mortal Kombat 2 reference.
Said reference pops up at the beginning of the Left Behind DLC (don't worry, you get this when you purchase Part 1) but it's easy to miss if you're not ready... or if your brightness settings aren't high enough.
We may be admittedly a bit biased in our profession, but fighting game fans sure do seem like they're more creative in showing off the genre than most others out there.
Professional animator D.M. Galloway recently released a fantastic stop motion short that pits Jim Carrey's Ace Ventura against the Mortal Kombat ninjas Scorpion and Reptile.

Super moves continue to be one of the premier feature of fighting games over 30 years since they were first implemented to bring they hype, but not all of them are made to play nice.
The aptly named content creator MrTopTenList recently released a fun new video counting down his top 10 picks for the most disrespectful Supers in all of fighting games.
