Is rollback netcode the future for SNK's fighting games? The recent Garou: Mark of the Wolves patch inspires hope for online warriors

A few weeks ago, something quite unexpected happened when I started up my PlayStation 4 and got a notification that a new patch had begun downloading for Garou: Mark of the Wolves. Obviously, this game is anything but new so new content was completely out of the question, and even patches to adress issues with the port seemed unlikely given that this particular re-release of the game was already over 3 years old, having been released on December 3rd, 2016.

This was a patch which came completely ouf of left field and what it did was revamp the netcode of the game by implementing the coveted rollback netcode which is heavily favored by the majority of online players to the game, making it a much more pleasant experience online when network environments aren't optimal (which they almost never are). This patch was done in a collaboration between SNK and Code Mystics, who have previously brought their rollback netcode to other classic SNK titles like Samurai Shodown 5 Special, The Last Blade 2 and The King of Fighters '97: Global Match. Now that we've seen rollback implmented for some classic SNK titles courtesy of these collaborations, the natural question becomes: what's next?

A true love letter to SNK fans — Why The King of Fighters All Star has been stealing my time and attention for the last few months

The King of Fighters All Star is SNK's venture in to the mobile game market courtesy of developer Netmarble Games, and as the name would suggest it focuses on the King of Fighters series and its setting and characters, and as anyone who has played a King of Fighters game is aware, there are quite a few venues and fighters to choose from.

Although mobile games keep getting more and more advanced (long gone are the days when we all played Snake on our Nokia and Ericsson phones) they still tend to fall in to the same kind of limitations, and while King of Fighters All Star isn't exactly a revolution of mobile gaming, it pays so much love and attention to the source material and what makes King of Fighters great that it feels like an absolute must-try for any SNK fan.

Poll results: If there is indeed a new Capcom vs. title in development, which company would you like to see them collaborate with for a new fighter?

Update: The results are in. Check out how our readers voted after the jump.

Earlier: The classic Capcom vs. series has ties going all of the way back to the early 90's with X-Men: Children of the Atom though they've since gone on to create crossover titles with many other developers / companies.

Yesterday gave us quite the surprise on that specific fighting game front when V's English voice actor from Devil May Cry 5 suggested that a new Capcom vs. title may very well be in production.

But who would Capcom characters be fighting against in this new decade?

I know full well that iDom tore through Capcom Cup with Laura, and I've known some immense frustration from getting robbed by online V-Trigger 1 shenanigans, but all sense of threat and anger goes out the window the second I look at Cheshirrr's take on the Brazilian Street Fighter.

The style and approach taken by this artist gives these characters particularly soft and mesmerizing looks, which is a nice departure from the power and battle-driven versions we so often see.
