Killer Instinct stories

What looked like a weird glitch during Combo Breaker 2018's Killer Instinct top 8 was actually a wild set up

It is not uncommon for Killer Instinct to have a strong showing at the Combo Breaker tournament series each year in Chicago. Combo Breaker 2018 marked another great year of Killer Instinct action, with an exciting tournament featuring many of the best players the game has to offer.

During one of the top 8 losers side matches, which featured Circa|Nicky and SD117|SonicDolphin117, a moment on stream seemed to confuse spectators -- myself included.

Landing a quick opener on Nicky's Fulgore, SonicDolphin117's Kim Wu began a combo but quickly transitioned into a Counter Breaker attempt. In Killer Instinct, Counter Breakers are a way of preventing an opponent from combo breaking you; it's risky, but the pay off is your foe being locked out and you scoring free damage.

Nicky took the bait, allowing the Kim Wu player to punish. Instead of a traditional combo, however, SonicDolphin117's Kim Wu seemed to stutter a second, then jump straight up while Fulgore continued the Combo Breaker animation.

"What in the world?!" commentator Stephen "Sajam" Lyon exclaimed when seeing the odd occurrence.

To those not in the know, this Killer Instinct moment appears to be a glitch or some sort of strange interaction brought upon by the situation. In fact, it's actually a pretty great set up that Kim Wu has in her arsenal.

A Nintendo 64 Classic appears to be in development and with it could come some classic and goofy fighting games

Nintendo's consoles have been doing very well for them the past few years not only with the meteoric launch of the Switch, but also with the successes of their mini "Classic" consoles.

The developer and publisher has already released classic versions of the NES and SNES for the modern era pre-packaged with dozens of games built into the system, including Street Fighter 2 Turbo, and now a follow-up appears to be on the horizon for Nintendo's third home console.

Nintendo recently filed a trademark application for 'N64' in Japan for "TV Game Machines, TV Game Programs, Downloadable Digital Programs, ROM cartridges, Smartphone use Program Storage Media and more" according to Siliconera. This is not a hard confirmation of a Nintendo 64 Classic console, but it sounds fairly close to it.

The Nintendo 64 had a plethora of iconic titles with the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64 and GoldenEye 007 though it also brought memorable fighting game additions with the original Super Smash Bros, Killer Instinct and ClayFighter.

For the previous classic Nintendo consoles, most games on the system were developed/ published by Nintendo themselves, but they do include games from a variety of other large publishers including Capcom, Konami and Square Enix meaning fighters from other publishers are certainly not off of the table.

Let's take a look at some of the more notable choices for fighting games that could pop up on a Nintendo 64 Classic console, and be sure to tell us in the comments what games you would like to see in the mini collection.

Killer Instinct fights on at Combo Breaker this year with a whopping $15,000 pot bonus; the promo video alone will give you goosebumps

With intricate attention to detail in terms of quality of life, character presentation, music and more, Killer Instinct is very clearly a fighting game made with the fighting game players in mind.

Though there have been plenty of hype moments and exciting events, KI has simply not been able to hold the interest of enough competitors for us to routinely see it at major tournaments in recent days.

That's very much not going to be the case this May in Chicago at Combo Breaker 2018, as the Killer Instinct Ultra Tour will be providing a $15,000 pot bonus.

This sizeable chunk of change comes as a result of the Kilgore Community Fund, continuing the theme of internal support the KI community has become known for.

If that wasn't reason enough to make the journey out to Chicago for one of the FGC's most revered yearly tournaments, the top 16 players will be paid out and every person that signs up for KI will receive a free Combo Breaker KI shirt (while supplies last).

You can find all the dirty details over at Combo Breaker's KI page, but first check out this inspiring promo to get your hairs standing up and your blood pumping:

Only one new generation Killer Instinct fighter made the list of top 10 characters our readers would like to see in a new franchise installment

Update: This poll has closed and final results have been uploaded. You can view them after the jump below.

Earlier: He was very clear that this was not a tease, rather just more of an interesting social experiment, but Creative Director at Microsoft Studios Global Publishing, Adam Isgreen, took to Twitter earlier today to forward a fairly intriguing question:

"A thread on the #killerinstinct forums is discussing who should return if we do a new KI. I just threw fire on it for fun: Pick 10 of the 39 to return. Who stays? Why? I can't even decide myself! What's your 10?"

The most recent KI game brought back virtually all the characters from the previous games while adding more than a few guest fighters such as Rash from Battle Toads, Arbiter from Halo and General RAAM from Gears of War.

We couldn't very well let the opportunity for a poll of our own go by, and so we decided to make one with all (I think he made a slight typo in his tweet) 29 fighters. You're allowed to pick your 10 favorites from the list, and we'll make sure we shoot the results Mr. Isgreen's way when it's all said and done.

It's hard not to see the franchise poster children not make an initial line up, so we expect characters like Jago, Orchid and Sabrewulf will be close to the top of the results.

Still, this is a great opportunity to see how the new and more obscure characters (as well as the guest fighters) landed with the general Killer Instinct fan base.

Happy fourth birthday Killer Instinct; full game, with all characters, currently available on Steam for just $19.99

It was on November 22nd back in 2013 that the Killer Instinct series finally saw a major revival with the release of the franchise's most recent title on Xbox One.

Since then, the roster has been expanded from eight to 29 characters. The fighting game has also seen a handful of new modes, stages and mechanics added along the way.

Though initially limited to Xbox One, KI eventually found its way to PC, and hit Steam on September 28th of this year. You can currently purchase the Steam version for just $19.99, a savings of 50%. Often acknowledged as a title that goes the extra mile for its fans. We should also mention, KI currently holds a 9/10 rating on Steam.

Seeing as it's the week of Black Friday, we're not sure if this price is going to stick around for too long, so best take action sooner rather than later if you're at all interested.

Head over to the Steam Store to get in on this deal (be sure to check the computer requirements before you download).

Congratulations to the development teams, players and general KI community on four years and counting of Combo Breaking fun.

Microsoft says no more Killer Instinct balance patches planned after upcoming 3.9 update

A new patch is headed to Killer Instinct very soon that is set to implement several system changes, as well as balance tweaks to many of the characters on the roster.

The 3.9 update was originally set for release earlier this week, but according to a recent blog on Ultra-Combo there were last minute delays. We can now expect to see the next patch go live sometime between today and Tuesday, September 5th, if all goes according to plan.

The Microsoft team has released a full set of patch notes for 3.9, and has also included a video demonstration of each character's balance changes.

The video mentions the Steam version of Killer Instinct is only weeks away, as opposed to months as it previously was. Much more on the subject wasn't divulged here, but we will be finding out more soon.

Update: This story has been updated with final results.

Absolute Battle is back, and as always, it's taking place in Texas.

This event is a big deal for Street Fighter 5 and Tekken 7, since it's part of both the Capcom Pro Tour and the Tekken World Tour, but it's an even bigger deal for Injustice 2, for which it is a Premier Event in the Injustice 2 Pro Series.

Each of these three games are boasting over 100 entrants, so there'll be a lot of matches lined up to be played this weekend.

Wii U, King of Fighters 14, BlazBlue: Central Fiction, Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2, Killer Instinct and Pokkén Tournament.

Balrog takes on TJ Combo in the latest Death Battle

Honestly, it's somewhat surprising that this fantasy bout has taken this long to pop up on Death Battle, but nonetheless, we now finally find out which of these two iconic fighting game boxers would win in a punch out to the death.

Killer Instinct's TJ Combo goes head to head with Street Fighter's Balrog right smack dab in the middle of the squared circle.

ScrewAttack!'s Wiz and Boomstick do a bit of research to find the specific stats for both boxers, and it turns out they're surprisingly close when it comes to strength and resiliency.

I personally am going to give the edge to Balrog, as he's the bigger of the two a 6'4" and I've definitely felt his wrath in no small way with V-Trigger in Street Fighter 5.

A few notable feats to keep in mind, Balrog once punched an elephant to death and has survived a 1,200+ ft fall. TJ is able to launch Fulgore, a 560 pound robot, 12 feet into the air with a single hit. Curiously enough, he has also survived a 1,200+ ft fall.

The latter's out-boxer style would be a technical counter to Balrog's brawler approach, but I still feel the fight money-happy boxer's brute force will be the deciding factor.
