Granblue Fantasy: Versus stories

Granblue Fantasy Versus 2.01 balance change Patch Notes released

Update: This story has been updated with full balance change patch notes for Granblue Fantasy Versus' 2.01 patch.

With this week seeing the arrival of Belial and the start of Season 2 for Granblue Fantasy Versus (more specifically, this is set to happen tomorrow it's hardly a surprise that we're getting the patch notes for the massive update right before it goes live.

This new update will add Belial to the game, some new story content together with him as well as a reset to the online ranked mode. The biggest thing people have been wondering about, though, is of course the balance changes. They've been released on the Japanese website officially and are being translated by myself for this article.

Should fighting games learn from MOBAs to restructure their online ranking systems? A few titles already started and it seems to be going well

Especially during these times which have most of us staying home more than we may be used to, online play in fighting games is quite the hot button topic. While there's obviously much discussion back and forth about improvements and normalizing implementation of well-developed rollback netcode for the community as a whole, my colleague John "Velociraptor" Guerrero and I started talking about an entirely different aspect of online fighting game play and realized that there's another area where there may be room for improvement for many of the current mainstream titles.

It came about fairly casually as we were talking about our recent experiences with Blizzard's MOBA game Heroes of the Storm and the more we talked about how the system in that game works for competitive game modes, the more we started comparing it to the current crop of fighting games. Since Velociraptor mainly plays Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition and I have a lot of experience with that game from the last few years, that was where the brunt of our conversation was focused. The question we landed at was, should mainstream fighting games learn more from MOBAs on how to approach online ranking systems? We decided to make a collaborative article out of it outlining our thoughts on what's good and bad about it, as well as taking a quick look at the games that have actually already started using similar systems for their online competitive modes.

Belial's movelist revealed for Granblue Fantasy: Versus Season 2 which includes a lot of trickery

Safe for work Mai, not as safe for work Mai, Wii-Fit Mai, Hsien-Ko Jam, and other fighting game beauties feature in this wonderful gallery from Phamoz

Along with the likes of Cammy, Morrigan, and Chun-Li, King of Fighters' Mai Shiranui is one of the most commonly drawn fighting game characters in the business. Zoma Phamoz takes a few creative passes at the fan-wielding fighter in some of their recent illustrations, and we thought they were more than good enough to share.

Though she's the most prevalent, Mai by far isn't the only character represented in our roundup as figures from Guilty Gear, Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, and even Skullgirls strut their stuff as well.

Four changes I'd like to see to the gameplay mechanics of Granblue Fantasy Versus

Granblue Fantasy Versus launched earlier this year to much fanfare and has been quite the success story for IP holders and publishers Cygames first venture into the fighting game space with the help of the development team at Arc System Works. Bringing to life the highly popular Granblue Fantasy property in a fighting game setting, the title has been quite successful across the world, though it has unsurprisingly seen its highest amount of sales in Japan where the mobile game it's based on is a massive hit.

Since the game's release I've been putting a ton of time into it and it didn't take very long for it to become my main fighting game to focus on. After spending countless hours in the game with not only my main Metera but also most of the rest of the cast, there are a few things I've noticed outside of the common things like characters balance that I'd like to see adjusted. Granblue Fantasy Versus does its source material proud by being quite addictive as a fighting game, but I think there's even more that could be done to make it a satisfying gameplay experience for players — so here are four major things I've been hoping to see done with the game for its second season which goes live in about a month, or failing that, further down the line in the future.

Granblue Fantasy Versus has four unknown characters remaining for Season 2 — These are my personal predictions for who they'll be

On September 24th, the second season of Granblue Fantasy Versus will be kicking off with balance changes for the whole cast, a ranked mode reset and the heavily anticipated Belial finally joining the roster. It'll be interesting to see what meta shakeups we get as a result of these changes and if there's anything new coming mechanically alongside Belial's arrival, though we'll likely have to wait until the end of next month to find out if that's the case or not once the patch officially drops.

At the end of Belial's trailer, we were treated to a teaser showing the lovely Cagliostro, another immensely popular characters from the series. The developers shared a little bit of info regarding her and I compiled that with some speculation based on her role and fighting style from the source game Granblue Fantasy in an article earlier this week. But what about the remaining four? As of yet, we have no clue about them — not even silhouettes — but as loyal readers are no doubt aware, I've been doing my research... and narrowed it down to exactly four characters I believe will be joining the roster by the end of the official release roadmap.

Nagoriyuki's reveal, Daigo's big CPT win, Street Fighter 5 Season 5 and more: Click Burgundy's fighting game art covers the latest FGC happenings

If you couldn't tell before, Click Burgundy is one of our absolute favorite artists in these parts in no small part for keeping up with the fighting game community and drawing what we're all seeing and hearing around the scene.

Now that we've got big announcements, tournaments and more for fighting games for the first time in a while, Burgundy's recent works are a great way to experience what's been going on in games like Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition, Granblue Fantasy: Versus and Guilty Gear Strive among others.

Cagliostro will be a technical character who can control space with proper setup — Let's run down what we know about her in Granblue Fantasy Versus

This past weekend, we got a lot of new details about the upcoming second season for Cygames hit fighting game (developed by Arc System Works) Granblue Fantasy Versus. The main event of it was of course the full gameplay trailer reveal for Belial, which we detailed heavily here, but we also got to hear about upcoming online improvements, new balance changes, a ranked mode reset and got a handy little roadmap showing when new content will be releasing. Also, at the end of the Belial trailer, we got a quick little teaser showing who's next after him — and it's the cutesy and adorable Cagliostro.

Of course there's a lot more to Cagliostro as a character than what little was gleamed towards the end of the trailer (some of which has been detailed by myself in the past here and here) and we're going to run through what you need to know about this little spellcaster before her inclusion in the game towards the end of October, but also focus on the quick statement Granblue Fantasy Versus' developers made about her playstyle for this game.

A sweet selection of sunglasses, a swaggy walk animation which might be a counter and what looks like a reversal — Belial trailer analysis

Last weekend, we were finally treated to our first glimpse at the second season of Granblue Fantasy Versus, which confirmed that we have balance changes coming, that Cagliostro will be joining the roster in October, that new RPG mode content has already launched for the game and even gave us a handy roadmap for everything coming up. All of this was of course very nice, but the showstealer who had everyone talking was none other than the suave evildoer who this article will be focusing on — Belial.

We got to see full gameplay glory of Belial which gave us looks at tons of hype animations and intricate cinematics featuring him and also gave us the clear release date of September 24th for when we can expect him to drop as a playable character to kick off Granblue Fantasy Versus' second season. While the trailer obviously didn't go too far into detail about how Belial's moves actually work, there's more than enough footage there to parse through to get a good idea, or at least give some educated guesses, on how some of his moves will function — so I decided to do just that, so you don't have to. Let's see what we can figure out about Belial based on his extravagant gameplay trailer.

What Granblue Fantasy Versus news can we expect to be present during tomorrow's Granblue Summer Stream?

This weekend (tomorrow, more specifically) we have a big presentation coming up for the Granblue Fantasy franchise. Now, to be clear, this is a show which will be focusing on the intellectual property as a whole, and as such will have its main focus on the core game Granblue Fantasy which is mainly played on mobile devices. Thanks to the expansion of the brand name of Cygames hit series though, there are a lot of other projects tied to the Granblue Fantasy banner which will also be included. We got direct confirmation during last week's Fighting Game Publisher's Roundtable that there would be new information and reveals for Granblue Fantasy Versus at this very event from the game's director over at Arc System Works, Kazuto Sekine.

Given that Granblue Fantasy is a Cygames property, it makes sense for them to want to separate their unveilings from a developer's roundtable when they have a bigger event for their whole brand going on just a week later, and as such most people were probably expecting something to be shown tomorrow regardless, but having confirmation from Sekine is reassuring. So what exactly is it we'll be seeing? We know about some of the upcoming Granblue Fantasy Versus content, though details are scarce, so going on the little information we have, coupled with how Cygames and Arc System Works have operated in the past when it comes to Granblue Fantasy Versus, we can at least speculate on what will be shown about 14 hours from now.

The Japan Fighting Game Publishers Roundtable was a big step forward but had problems which could be ironed out in the future

Longtime Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada and Bandai Namco certainly deserve props for organizing an event which saw representatives from Capcom, Arc System Works, Koei Tecmo, Arika and SNK all come together to answer fan questions and reveal what's in store for their games including Street Fighter 5, Samurai Shodown, Soul Calibur 6, Guilty Gear Strive and even Fighting EX Layer.

The Japan Fighting Game Publishers Roundtable brought every single one of the country's big fighting game developers into one digital room publicly which ended up as quite the success story despite some of the glaring flaws present in their initial meeting.
