Unsafe on hit moves can be strong in fighting games? Jmcrofts explains five ways how these attacks can still be useful

Generally, the best type of attacks in fighting games are those that provide a high amount of reward in return for very little risk. However, for the sake of balance, these moves are typically pretty rare.

It's often when an attack is discovered to be "unsafe on hit" (not just block) when many have a tendency to declare the motion to be worthless. Jmcrofts has released a video that discusses five ways how unsafe on hit moves can still be useful.

How getting blown up in Battleship helped me find the balance between using heart and mind in fighting games

For a long while I've categorized fighting game players into two general camps: poets and scientists. The poets are those that play with the chaos of feeling or gut, while the scientists use the strict mathematical order of things like frame data to approach the battle.

I've always naturally been more of a poet, often unable to tell others exactly how positive or negative the moves I use are, and sometimes unable to fully articulate why I made certain decisions beyond a sheepish "It just felt like the right thing to do there." With as important as frame data has proven to be in Street Fighter 5, I've made an effort to bolster my scientist side, but found a very real pothole going too far with this approach while playing a different game altogether: Battleship.

'We should be critical of developers for not implementing correct netplay into games' - Maximilian on fighting game netcode and how to make it better

Gaming's continued transition into the online arena has become more and more accelerated in recent times, and it's now to the point that general netcode standards have widely surpassed the experiences most fighting game developers are producing.

It would seem as though this would be one of the most conspicuous and rapidly-dealt-with issues, and yet the majority of even our genre's most favored titles still offer laughably poor online experiences. Maximilian recently went on a stream rant as to why this is the case.

The new Riot game could change the fighting genre forever, but there are plenty of obstacles in the way

When Tom Cannon revealed what we all suspected and confirmed that a Riot Games fighting title is in development at EVO this year, it officially marked the start of a new journey for the FGC.

We know next to nothing of the particulars of this upcoming game, and the best guess in terms of a release date right now is answered with a very broad "not anytime soon." Be all that as it may, the possibilities and implications for the League of Legends developer's second major game are huge, especially for the fighting genre.

This apparently got Sajam thinking. "When I look at Dota and I see all these great things that it has [like] all the extra content, the tournament, the event is for the community, and then I think to myself... when it comes to fighting games, you know what I want? I want to wake up and not have to think 'I hope any of the three or four fighting games that come out next year have good netcode,'" said Sajam.

Brian F: Online for fighting games is trash and prevents people from practicing as hard as other tier 1 eSports games

We've recently been discussing an apparent dip in Street Fighter 5's netcode quality, but conversations have begun drifting away from a direct focus on SF5 and more toward the general (rough) relationship between the fighting game genre and online play.

Brian's message points a finger toward fighting game developers in general, calling for them to up their netcode standards... to put it nicely.
