'All the games at EVO have had notorious online issues' - Maximilian is understandably pessimistic about EVO 2020 going online

For a few months now, Maximilian has been making a joke about how the games that make up the EVO 2020 lineup were chosen because they all suck to play online and thus EVO would be the only place where you could facilitate legitimate international competition for them.

Said joke became simultaneously funnier and sadder overnight after EVO organizers announced the official cancellation of the event and plans to transition it online.

EVO 2020 online tournament results should be on par with the offline tournament results of the past

If you're expecting the results for EVO 2020 online to be radically different than what we've been seeing in the fighting game community through the years, think again.

For those of you who haven't been paying attention, a number of tournaments have already moved online, for the time being, due to the novel coronavirus.

'Dude, you disconnected so I take it via DQ... sorry bro, it's over' โ€” fighting game skit pokes fun at online tournaments

Since many offline FGC tournaments up to this point have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak, there's been a transition towards playing fighting games online. Still, the online fighting game experience certainly isn't without its hiccups.

Due to technicalities, the better player doesn't always win while dealing with a fighting game's netcode. Recently, Alex Jebailey, in collaboration with Justin Wong, released a hilarious skit that really highlights a circumstance that's beginning to turn into a meme.

I really wasn't expecting this but Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme Vs. Maxiboost ON is now my most anticipated fighting game of the year

Sometimes a video game sequel will come out that essentially halts all of the momentum a series may have had going for it, and others may reinvigorates the fans to once again get excited for the return of one of their favorites from the past.

I got to personally experience the latter option there last weekend with the closed network test for Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme Vs. Maxiboost ON which quickly made it my most anticipated fighting game of the year.

Update: Bad boys, rich kids, nerds, class clowns - Which fighting game lunch table would you sit at in high school?

Update: Voting in the poll has officially closed, and it seems like a lot of us would like to park our rears next to Dan Hibiki.

The fighting game community is made up of people of pretty much all age groups, nationalities and backgrounds, but there's a universal and personal aspect to the scene that helps represent us as individuals: which characters do we relate with the most?

One member in the FGC, ChefRaptor, has put together a way to help us figure out who we all identify with by posing the question of which table would you sit at in a lunch room filled with fighters forming their own cliques?

The Sexy Legs meme has reached the fighting game community

There's a new meme currently sweeping the internet that takes advantage of how Twitter lines up multiple photos when shared. Deemed "The Sexy Legs" meme (at least, I think that's what it's being called), we're seeing characters, people, and other things matched up with a pair of legs in thigh-high boots that normally wouldn't make sense outside of this meme.

Well, the meme has now hit the fighting game community. Several folks on Twitter have been pairing up their own images to make some... interesting creations, and honestly, some of these are pretty great.

Why Wi-fi sucks for gaming; We all know someone who needs to watch this quick video from Skullgirls creator, MikeZ

Sure, maybe YOU already know that using Wi-fi for online competition is a cardinal sin in the world of gaming, but it's also safe to say that there are still many people out there who have not gotten the memo. With the recent spike in network gaming thanks to mass quarantining, the message is especially pertinent.

Skullgirls creator Mike "MikeZ" Zaimont has released a video explaining the particulars as to why not using a hardwired connection causes more turbulence in online interactions.

Check out Taho's beautiful ladies of fighting games artwork

Fatima "Taho" Camiloza is both an artist as well as a video game developer, and so it comes as no surprise she has a knack for drawing some of our favorite fighting game characters.

While not the main focus of her portfolio we were able to round up enough images for a quick EventHubs gallery that spans five separate franchises.

Immediately level up your footsies game with this whiff punish option select

You could simplify the art of fighting game footsies into a broad conceptual statement like, "hit the other character without letting them hit you," but anyone who has actually tried to do this against a competent foe knows that this is a well of seemingly infinite depth.

Such is to be expected when you're pitting two human minds against one another in a realtime puzzle-solving process that's being developed by both on the fly, and yet some people seem to have figured out how to do this more efficiently than others. Part of it is reaction time and part of it is keen observation paired with quick analysis, but a significant chunk of having a consistent footsies game is knowing the tricks of the trade.

CEO 2020 most likely to be rescheduled to December instead of June this year

Traditionally, CEO โ€” one of the biggest yearly fighting game tournaments โ€” is known for taking place in June. However, the COVID-19 global pandemic is no doubt having an abnormal effect on routine in 2020.

Alex Jebailey, the tournament organizer behind CEO, has taken to Twitter and has explained his plans to hopefully reschedule CEO 2020 to December of this year instead of June.

Street Fighter 5 director shares collection of classic Capcom posters including Street Fighter Alpha, Marvel vs. Capcom, JoJo, Red Earth and CvS

Street Fighter 5's director Takayuki Nakayama began his work with Capcom 20 years ago though it appears as though his love for the company's classic fighting game franchises dates back farther than that.

Nakayama recently shared a bunch of images of a previously unseen style guide book for Street Fighter 2's initial release, and now he appears to be dipping more into his personal collection of posters from many of Capcom's big arcade hits of the 90's.

The Tension Gauge, Guard Cancels, and the Groove System are fighting game mechanics that Daigo likes but they probably can't fit in Street Fighter 5

RB|Daigo Umehara was recently asked about his thoughts in regards to which characters he'd like to see for Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition. Seemingly content with the roster, Daigo instead began to talk about fighting game mechanics.

Although he noted that these mechanics probably wouldn't work for Street Fighter 5 specifically, he mentioned that he was a fan of Guilty Gear's Tension Gauge, Guard Crushes, Guard Cancels, and Capcom vs. SNK 2's Groove System.

Update: Fighting game companies release iconic stages to use as video call backgrounds in games like Street Fighter, Granblue Fantasy: Versus and more

Update: Bandai Namco has also joined the chat by releasing a bunch of Soul Calibur-themed backgrounds including a handful of its newest stages and my personal favorite, the character creation screen.

The amount of people around the world that are now working from home or finishing up their classes online has grown exponentially lately due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which has opened the doors to more creative environments to draw energy from.

Video calling services like Zoom allow users to swap out their background surroundings with pretty much any image. This has started a new trend of companies releasing their own official backgrounds to use including a handful in the fighting game space.
