Dead or Alive stories

Dead or Alive 6 to feature the series' first-ever super meter; new Special button is a 'rescue button for beginners' says the game's director

Dead or Alive 6 is coming early 2019. What feels like an out of left field announcement this week has people once again talking about the fast-paced 3D fighting title.

We've seen the official reveal trailer for Dead or Alive 6, and though it provided us with a look at some gameplay, there is still a lot to learn about how the game will function.

IGN was given the opportunity to get hands-on time with Koei Tecmo's upcoming title, and were also able to speak with Dead or Alive 6 producer / director Yohei Shimbori.

Fortunately, Shimbori shed some light on some of the game's mechanics.

Though this installment in the Dead or Alive series will play similarly to its predecessors, every new game in a series should have some added features to keep things fresh. Naturally, Dead or Alive 6 will have some new bells and whistles, like the new Special button.

Set to R1 on a PlayStation 4 controller and RB on an Xbox One controller, the Special button allows players to perform a powerful combo by simply tapping it repeatedly. This combo, or "Fatal Rush," utilizes up to four "neatly animated" punches or kicks that will make newcomers feel like expert competitors.

'We made a conscious decision to make the characters less sexualized' - Dead or Alive 6 director discusses the shift in design philosophy for the team

Koei Tecmo revealed Dead or Alive 6 earlier today much to the surprise of almost everyone on the internet, and the developers over at Team Ninja are already out and providing more details about the game and its new features.

The game's director and producer, Yohei Shimbori, and art director Yutaka Saito joined IGN to discuss what DOA6 will have to offer along with the changes and additions that are being made to the new title

Those that watched the reveal trailer for DOA6 probably noticed that the female characters were dressed in less revealing costumes than what had become expected of the franchise that has Xtreme Beach Volleyball spin-offs which appears to be a very intentional decision by the development team.

“We wanted to make a more cool and mature Dead or Alive this time, and to that end we made a conscious decision to make the characters less sexualized,” said director Shimbori via IGN.

Female characters' breasts will no longer feature the exaggerated 'jiggle physics' or seemingly defy gravity with their bouncing as was becoming somewhat of a staple for the series.

Below is a side-by-side comparison showing Kasumi as she appears in one of her bikini alternate costumes in Dead or Alive 5 next to what is likely Kasumi's new default costume for DOA6.

Dead or Alive 6 revealed

More big fighting game news this morning as Koei Tecmo has revealed Dead or Alive 6.

The new title is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam, making it the first installment of the Dead or Alive series to be developed on current-gen technology.

Koei Tecmo has released a trailer to showcase the upcoming fighting game. In it, we see returning characters Kasumi, Hayabusa, Jann Lee, Zack, Hayate and Helena, as well as what appears to be a brand new character.

Much of what we know from the Dead or Alive series seems to still be intact in Dead or Alive 6. Stage interactions make their return and now seem to involve background character participation.

We also see that super moves have been brought back and still retain their cinematic quality. From the looks of it, supers still need to be charged mid-combo.

There also appears to be a blood splatter effect that can be seen on-screen when certain hits land. This might just be an added effect for the trailer, however.

Dead or Alive 6 is expected to drop early 2019.

You'll be able to play Sega Dreamcast games using your PlayStation 3 and 4 fightsticks this May, thanks to Brook's new controller converter

The Sega Dreamcast has a reputation of being a mecca of sorts for top quality fighting games. Released back in November 1998, the home console saw the release of several legendary competitive fighting titles.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Street Fighter 3 Third Strike, Capcom vs. SNK 2, Soul Calibur, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Guilty Gear X, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Dead or Alive 2, and many more are among the Dreamcast catalog.

Though it is certainly an old piece of hardware, die-hard fans still hold it near and dear to their hearts. And that was likely the inspiration for Brook's new controller converter.

The company has designed an adapter that will allow you to use PlayStation 3 and 4 fightsticks on your Dreamcast and PC.

"While the Dreamcast had quite a variety of amazing fighting games in its library, like many other systems during it's time, lacked a proper arcade stick to use them on," the official product description reads. This converter features a USB and wireless interface, button mapping, upgradable firmware, turbo and vibration features, and X-Input support.

The converter is currently available for pre-order on Arcade Shock, and has a price tag of $39.99. Its first release will be limited and is expected to ship in mid to late May 2018, so if you're interested in this product you'll want to act fast.

Team Ninja is gearing up for an announcement this weekend -- could we see a new fighting game?

Team Ninja has noted that it will probably be worth it for people to stick around after the prizes given out at their Battle Royal 2017 Grand Finals event at NEC18.

They specifically state that an "announcement [will be made] once the prizes are given to the champions on Dec. 17th." What could this announcement be?

This is particularly interesting considering that Dead or Alive 5: Last Round's DLC is ending once the year is over. Development here has basically finished.

Considering that Dead or Alive 5 originally released back in 2012 (updated in 2013 and again in 2015), the timing might be good for the sixth installment. Could this be the announcement that Team Ninja is prepping for?

Interestingly enough, an image was also posted with the tweet. It's a black background that simply has text stating that "I'm a fighter."

This seems to hint, or outright state, that this announcement will be for a fighting game. It certainly wouldn't make too much sense to announce a Ninja Gaiden game after a fighting game tournament...

After the jump, you'll find the trailer to the last batch of costumes that will be released for Dead or Alive 5: Last Round.
