5 mechanical MK11 issues Mortal Kombat 12 needs to fix
Mortal Kombat has actually evolved quite a lot over its last few games under NetherRealm Studios' banner as Ed Boon and his team have made clear efforts to include content that appeases both their massive casual and fairly large competitive audiences.
Many of these efforts are seen in 2019's Mortal Kombat 11, but not all of them have been resounding successes. In a recent video of his, True Under Dawg Gaming lists off five mechanical issues that he hopes NRS changes when Mortal Kombat 12 eventually drops.
We'll take a look at just one of these here in the introduction text: breakaways. Mortal Kombat has been implementing combo breakers, a mechanic where players trade meter in order to stop combos that have already been started, since way back in the Deception days.
Said mechanic has been around for longer than that (Killer Instinct was doing it back in the 90's) and always has major effects in terms of gameplay flow and feel. It's actually a huge deal to have this kind of power to play with, and trying to balance a game that includes combo breakers requires a good bit of extra thought and attention.
NetherRealm took things in a slightly different direction in MK11 by ditching traditional combo breakers in favor of the new "breakaway" mechanic. Instead of characters suddenly interrupting combos with a breaking attack, they could now fall out airborne juggle combos (a common sight in MK) and end things in a more defensive manner than before.
True takes some issue with the way breakaways were implemented (as do many MK11 fans) and ultimately would like to see the mechanic removed in MK12. Check out the full video below to see exactly why breakaways were so poorly received in MK11 along with the four other complaints the content creator hopes to see rectified in the next franchise entry.
