Cammy's level 2 super in Street Fighter 6 is totally a reference to an iconic scene from Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie
Are you still standing after seeing Street Fighter 6's latest major reveals or are you floored like us? Well, there's still a lot to dissect from the new gameplay trailer, and fans continue to dig deep to find all of the references they can and learn more about how the newest characters fight.
During yesterday's showcase, legacy fighters Zangief and Cammy were shown, as well as newcomer Lily, but fans were quick to notice a major reference staring them right in the face during the Cammy portion. If the killer bee's level 2 super looked oddly familiar to you, it's because it is clearly directly inspired by an iconic scene in Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie.
From what we've gathered so far, Capcom is looking back through the entire 30-year history of Street Fighter for references and details to add into Street Fighter 6. We've seen callbacks to the Street Fighter Alpha series, Street Fighter 3 Third Strike, Street Fighter 4, and numerous other references from Street Fighter lore injected into the game already.
Even the movie 300 is represented in the game, however, this might be the first time we're seeing Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie inspire something in Street Fighter 6.
"Known for her bone-crunching throws, Cammy’s Level 2 Super Art Killer Bee Spin will make you wince again as she performs a chokehold on the opponent," writes Capcom about the maneuver in a PS Blog entry about the new fighters. Beyond just a chokehold, Cammy's super sees her grab the opponent's collar after a dive kick in, spin them around all while essentially performing a handstand on their shoulders, then come down from behind them and kick their knees out to basically crumple them into a human pretzel.
Though the official description of the move doesn't mention the Street Fighter 2 movie directly, it does say that the super "will make you wince again," implying that we've seen this before. This further adds to the case that this is indeed a reference to something else — and naturally, it has to be the SF2 movie scene.
Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie first saw its release in Japan on August 6, 1994. There are several iconic scenes in the film, including Ryu hitting Sagat with the legendary Shoryuken that scarred him and that one shower fight scene between Chun-Li and Vega.
However, in Cammy's scene, the assassin dives head first into a gaggle of security guards taking them out one by one until she reaches her target — British Minister of Justice Albert Sellers. After knocking out three guards, Cammy grabs Sellers by his collar, leaps up onto his shoulders, twists around, snaps his neck, then comes down and kicks his knees out from behind leaving him pretzel-shaped.
