Ed Boon highlights Mortal Kombat vs. Killer Instinct fan art and then jokingly 'konfirms' it
It's been over a year since NetherRealm Studios announced the completion of post-launch content for Mortal Kombat 11. As such, they've since moved on to their next project.
The entirety of 2022 is now behind us, and we've barely received any word about what NetherRealm Studios is working on. Rumors indicate that it could be Mortal Kombat 12, Injustice 3 or even something involving Disney's Marvel IP.
Funnily enough, there was even a rumor at one point that suggested that NetherRealm Studios was working on Killer Instinct 2, a sequel to the Killer Instinct released for the Xbox One back in 2013. Ed Boon cheekily responded about the possibility of having a character like Sabrewulf appearing as an Xbox exclusive fighter.
Of course, Mortal Kombat hasn't done a console exclusive character since Kratos appeared in Mortal Kombat 9 back in 2011. Due to the character being immediately banned by the community, it feels like NetherRealm Studios will be avoiding this type of scenario in the future.
Recently, Flavio Luccisano, a fighting game fan, created artwork depicting a versus match between Mortal Kombat's Sonya Blade and Killer Instinct's Black Orchid. Luccisano tagged Boon and asked if he thought this scenario was possible.
Praising the work, Boon suggested raising up and separating the two logos to help make them more identifiable. After Luccisano did this, Boon seemingly "konfirmed" that this was happening.

More than likely, Ed Boon is once again just being cheeky with fans. His Tweet should probably not be taken as a confirmation that NetherRealm Studios is working on Mortal Kombat vs. Killer Instinct.
As of right now, Mortal Kombat 12 is still the most likely project that NetherRealm Studios is working on. We'll just have to keep waiting until NetherRealm Studios is ready to make an official announcement to truly know though.
