New Mortal Kombat 1 commercial featuring Dave Bautista pays homage to the 1993 Mortal Monday commercial

The commercial advertising the release of Mortal Kombat 1 has been unveiled. Dave Bautista, a retired professional wrestler and the actor who plays Drax the Destroyer in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, played a critical part in the commercial.

This commercial actually pays homage to another commercial that debuted back in 1993. As pointed out by Ed Boon himself (back in 2018), the "Mortal Monday" by Retroware TV ad first debuted in 1993, almost 30 years ago.

The similarities between the two commercials are fairly obvious. Within the latest commercial, it begins with Dave Bautista pushing some books in a library before he stops in front of another table where another man appears to be studying.

Bautista suddenly looks over at the man that's studying before saying "Mortal Kombat" in a low voice. This appears to get the other man's attention.

Eventually, a crowd of people begin gathering into the streets. By this point, people are basically screaming "Mortal Kombat." A slower rendition of the classic Mortal Kombat theme is also playing throughout the ad.

Notably, this is actually how the 1993 commercial was structured. A crowd of people were seen gathering into the streets while screaming about Mortal Kombat.

There's even a scene that's clearly meant to be identical to a scene that played out during the 1993 ad. Needless to say, this feels like the perfect way to advertise a game titled as "Mortal Kombat 1." Check it all out below:

As pointed out by unCAGEDgamez and thethiny, there's also a very brief look at Shang Tsung during gameplay. We don't actually see Shang Tsung perform any attacks as he appears to just be acting out his intro dialogue animation with some opponent.
