Raiden apparently has a sibling in Mortal Kombat 1... but it's not Fujin?

Or is it?

Fire God Liu Kang seems to have wielded basically complete control over the timeline reset going into Mortal Kombat 1, and he wasn't afraid to shake up the norms in his new era.

Through the recent MK1 previews, it was revealed that Raiden has a sibling in this universe, but apparently, they're not Fujin.

According to a pre-fight intro vs. Liu Kang, Kung Lao asks, "Can I play a part, when Raiden's sister is tested?" in likely reference to how he and Raiden were tested by the god and Madam Bo at the beginning of the Story Mode.

Fujin is the only family member of Raiden we've ever met throughout the series up to this point unless you want to bring up that strange detail of Shao Kahn also being his bro in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.

We don't know what this means for the new timeline, but it brings up some interesting possibilities that Liu Kang cooked up.

The first of which being that it is technically Fujin, but they've been essentially gender swapped into being a woman now.

There's already some evidence for this in other characters with Madam Bo being presumed to be this canon's version of Bo Rai Cho, so it doesn't sound too outlandish that Liu Kang would do something similar for others too.

Fujin's Mortal Kombat 11 ending does show him living out multiple mortal lives including as a father and a woman, which could perhaps back that up or another fan theory going around that Fujin is now the dad of Raiden and his sister.

It could also be that Liu Kang left Fujin with his deity status while crafting Raiden a new family as a mortal fighter now in MK1.

Ironically, the least likely theory out of them we've seen is that Fujin just isn't present in this timeline at all (for right now at least).

We've yet to see any character specifically left out or removed from Liu Kang's new era considering even villains like General Shao and Shang Tsung are still around though the god seemingly messed with them to make them hopefully less of a threat by having the former be born a sickly child and the latter a snake oil salesman — which still probably isn't going to work out well for him.

It'd be rather bizarre to think that Liu Kang would exclude Fujin from this new world since the god of wind was one of his most trusted allies to make it through MK11: Aftermath's story as planned.

Hopefully, NetherRealm Studios will provide more answers and details when Mortal Kombat 1 releases on September 19, but it's just as likely they will end up leaving that open ended at least for the time being.

Fujin is still almost assuredly around. It's just in what sort of form he's been given now that's the big question.
