Street Fighter 2: Pocky Edition 'releasing' this month to celebrate the series' 35th anniversary
For decades, fighting game fans have continued to joke about the seemingly never-ending versions of Street Fighter 2 Capcom has made, but this one is a little bit different.
Glico and Capcom have now revealed Street Fighter 2: Pocky Edition as a new special version of the iconic title that'll "release" later this month to celebrate the franchise's 35th anniversary.
SF2: Pocky Edition will technically be a free game for those who purchase the world warrior-branded snacks, which are set to go on sale this Tuesday, November 29, according to Famitsu.
Inside the box of Pocky is a QR code and password needed to play the game on either a smartphone or PC — although there will apparently be some actual Pocky Edition arcade cabinets available at select locations in Japan.
The game appears to be very similar to the special Street Fighter 5: Pocky Edition featured at Capcom Cup 2019 where players whittle down their opponent's life like normal.
Once the health reaches a point where the gauge resembles a stick of the snack, however, players have to knock out the opponent in that range to score a Pocky KO for a special ending.
Like similar promotions, this one will probably be technically exclusive to Japan, but interested fans should be able to import a box easily enough or keep an eye on their local Asian markets.
At this time, there doesn't appear to be a competition or sweepstakes involved with the game's release but that could very well change once the limited edition Pocky releases.
This isn't even the first food-themed version of SF2 to come out this year funnily enough, as Capcom teamed up with a Japanese sparkling water company this Summer to create an augmented reality fighter where the world warriors beat up bottles.
More information about Street Fighter 2: Pocky Edition and the snacks can be found on Famitsu though it is in Japanese.
