Bandai Namco aims to release Tekken 8 in 2023

Fans have heard very little about Bandai Namco's upcoming next-gen fighting title, Tekken 8. After an... interesting and very brief teaser at Evo 2022 back in August and a full-fledged teaser trailer during Sony's September State of Play, there's still so much we simply don't know about the game.

That may have changed this morning, however, as Bandai Namco released their latest financial report that includes details about the company's upcoming plans for shareholders. While there's information about Elden Ring and various other Bandai Namco products, one section in particular makes mention of Tekken 8 and says that the goal is to have it released in 2023.

The report is written entirely in Japanese, and thanks to the translation work of our very own Nicholas "MajinTenshinhan" Taylor, we are able to learn what it says in English. This paragraph from the report notes that Bandai Namco is looking to get Tekken 8 out sometime next year.

"In addition to the titles we still have planned for 2022 release, we also have big titles planned for 2023 which players can play for a long time and explore deeply," the financial report begins. "Tekken 8 is one title which is currently in development with a goal of releasing in 2023."

Naturally, this news comes as a surprise due to how little we've seen and heard about Tekken 8 and the release window given. For comparison's sake, Capcom also has Street Fighter 6 slated for a 2023 launch, and quite a bit of the game has been revealed already including the identities of the full day 1 roster.

One way Bandai Namco's statement could also be interpreted is that Tekken 8 is being prepped for launch sometime within the company's 2023 fiscal year. Their fiscal year begins on April 1, 2023 and ends on March 31, 2024, and an early 2024 launch seems a bit more plausible.

Either way, we now have a tangible release window for Tekken 8 that we didn't have previously.

Bandai Namco had a strong showing with Tekken 8 in the September teaser trailer, sharing actual gameplay footage that intertwined story mode elements into it for a dynamic demonstration. Mainstay characters Kazuya and Jin did battle in the trailer, and there were several instances of actual moves and combos that each fighter has at their disposal being on display.

The background featured extreme weather conditions like massive tornadoes and big waves, which Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada stated was put there to show off what the new hardware is capable of.

"In the trailer, you can see this level of quality in the newly created playable character models that completely sets itself apart from the current Tekken 7, and in little details like how water droplets run down the character's skin," said Harada about the highly detailed graphics in the Tekken 8 teaser trailer. "This is not footage created solely for trailer purposes, but an actual real-time rendering of what is happening on the game screen."

We don't know when we'll see more on Tekken 8, but The Game Awards next month is probably the best place to keep an eye on for more as many companies use the big show as a place to make large reveals. The Game Awards is taking place on December 8.
