New Street Fighter 6 details reveals information about Ken's design and story, prequel Udon comic series announced

Ever since images of his redesign first appeared online, fans have been wondering what the heck is going on with "Hobo Ken" in Street Fighter 6, and now we have a few more answers.

Game Informer is continuing their special coverage of SF6 this month with new information regarding Ken's story and design philosophy with more details promised to be revealed in a prequel comic series from Udon Entertainment.

According to the game's art director, Kaname Fujioka, they wanted to bring back the fiery and explosive side of Ken's personality from Street Fighter 2 while his goofier side has been toned down.

"In the Alpha series, he was a little more playful and lighthearted in a way," said Fujioka via Game Informer. "For 6, we wanted to bring that fiery explosiveness back into it. In comparison, Luke in Street Fighter 6 might be more cheery and a kind of playful character. We wanted to differentiate from that, so we wanted to go with this more fiery type of personality.

"And there being the story behind Ken and there being a more serious tone to him, we wanted to express that through the character designs as well."

This shift was coupled together with the developer's desire to give Ken a reason to fight again because Director Takayuki Nakayama states Mr. Masters' life had become too stable.

"Throughout the series, it seems like his life has become more and more stable, and the team felt like he was losing a reason to fight. But this is a way to create that reason for him to step up" - Takayuki Nakayama

So Capcom moved forward with a scenario where Ken is in hiding where he can't contact Mel or Eliza, but what is he on the run from?

The team still won't spill the beans about what fully transpired with Mr. Masters although they didn't leave us with nothing.

Udon is currently working on a new four-issue comic series that'll serve as a prequel story for Ken going into SF6.

Game Informer has a handful of unfinished pages of the comic as well as an image from Ken's Arcade Story where he's apparently being detained with the text "Who's behind the terrorist bombing?" and "Questions surrounding the champ."

These appear to imply a plot to frame Ken and / or the Masters Foundation for bombings, which could tie back to the thread of Luke's father being killed by terrorists even though SF6 takes place at least a decade after those events.

Luke is seen wearing military gear and coming into contact with a boy who is more than likely Mel though we won't know the purpose of their meeting until the comic releases.

The Udon comic pages show Ken meeting up with a mysterious group of characters who we don't yet seem to know... except for one.

The older gentleman appears to have an identical beard to the SF6 newcomer JP, so if he is indeed the main villain of the new game, perhaps his group plays a heavy role in Ken's downfall.

Ken can't exactly go walking around barefoot in his gi while he's on the run from the law, so his new design with the coat and boots are to help him lay low.

According to Fujioka, however, the red Shoto does still carry around some items that are important to his identity as a world warrior, which can be seen by the black belt wrapped around his arm.

As far as we can tell, there's no confirmed release date for the new Udon Street Fighter 6 comic, but it sounds like it'll probably come shortly before or around the time the game arrives in 2023.
