Capcom has quite literally begun the countdown for what is very likely the announcement of Street Fighter 6

Late last night, Capcom dropped a Tweet that effectively said nothing, and yet revealed a lot. This Tweet links to a countdown on the Capcom Games website. It's heavily implied that a new game will be announced once this countdown timer expires.

Although there are some that have been speculating that Capcom could be prepping to announce a new Resident Evil remake or a title for some other popular non-fighting Capcom series, us fighting game enthusiasts know that this countdown is scheduled to end right as the Capcom Cup Exhibitions are to conclude. All signs seem to be pointing towards Capcom revealing first details about their next Street Fighter project โ€” what is very likely Street Fighter 6.

As of the time of writing this, Capcom's countdown sits at "6 days" and "16 hours." The timeline for this countdown alone reveals quite a lot about what this could potentially be. Seemingly in response to this, "Street Fighter 6" has begun trending on Twitter.

The countdown will be expiring either in the late hours of February 20, 2022 or around midnight on February 21, 2022. This will be the tail end of the exhibitions that have been scheduled to take place.

Originally, this was the timeslot for Capcom Cup 8, the finale of the 2021 Capcom Pro Tour season. However, this event essentially had to be cancelled by Capcom due to the rising concern for COVID-19.

In its place, exhibition matches between the qualifying players were announced. Needless to say, Capcom has traditionally had big fighting game announcements at the ready after Capcom Cup events have concluded.

Street Fighter 5 was originally released on February 16, 2016, just about six years ago. With postlaunch support for Street Fighter 5 nearly wrapped up, it's expected that Capcom will announce what their next Street Fighter project is after teasing about it so much during the Luke Digital Showcase.

We know that Capcom has very little to announce regarding Street fighter 5 at this point because it's already been stated many times that Luke is intended to be the last DLC character for the game. The addition of the Season 5 roster โ€” Dan, Rose, Oro, Akira and Luke โ€” completes Street Fighter 5's roster at 45 characters.

It's also been well established that Capcom has begun work on the next Street Fighter project, whatever that may be. During the breakdown for Luke in Street Fighter 5, it was stated outright that Luke will be featured in this new project in some capacity.

"Luke is an important character who will be featured in the next Street Fighter project, so we hope you try him out when he's released in Street Fighter 5," said Shuhei Matsumoto and Takayuki Nakayama, respective Producer and Director of Street Fighter 5, towards the end of the Luke breakdown showcase.

Not only this, but the two would then go on to state that this was not necessarily the end of Capcom's digital series format even though Street Fighter 5 was ending. They then told fans that Capcom had new information to reveal in 2022.

"This wraps up the Street Fighter 5 digital showcase series and it also concludes the character releases, but we will continue to support the title," continued Matsumoto and Nakayama. "We, the development team, will use this experience as a springboard to move on to the next project! While this is the end of this digital showcase series for Street Fighter 5, this is more of a 'see you soon' rather than a 'goodbye.' We look forward to providing you more information next year!"
