How Reptile's redesign in the 3D era of Mortal Kombat is easily the most hated in the series
As someone who has been a fan of the Mortal Kombat series since the beginning, Reptile is among my favorite characters in the series. However, it should be noted that I'm only a fan of Reptile while he's donning his humanoid ninja appearance (including how Reptile looks in Mortal Kombat 9 and Mortal Kombat X).
Like most other fans, however, I thought the redesigns in Mortal Kombat 4 and Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance were... atrociously bad. Needless to say, I was reminded of these awful Reptile designs recently thanks to TrueUnderDawgGaming's video upload that reviews Reptile's redesign in Deadly Alliance.
In Deadly Alliance, Reptile has effectively been turned into Aeon Calcos — the Lizardman — from the Soul Calibur series. It's not as though I hate Soul Calibur's Lizardman, but this wasn't the Reptile I enjoyed playing in the 2D Mortal Kombat titles.
Funnily enough, Reptile in Deadly Alliance was actually a really strong character. However, this wasn't due to how his specials operated. In fact, his only returning special was the Acid Spit, while he also gained some sort of rolling move that never returned in Mortal Kombat 9 or Mortal Kombat X.
What made Reptile so strong was apparently his silly looking Crab stance. This effectively unlocked ridiculous mix ups and poking options for Reptile.
