Street Fighter 5 is finally Capcom's best selling fighting game as a single release
Technically speaking
Street Fighter 5 began its life underwhelming fans everywhere, which caused the game to fall below Capcom's initial sales expectations, but things have continued to improve and truck on to find eventual success.
Now as of June 30, 2022, Street Fighter 5 has finally become Capcom's best selling single release of a fighting game in their history.
The updated Platinum Titles page for Capcom confirms SF5 now sits at 6.6 million copies sold after 6 and a half years on the market, making it #8 in the company's rankings overall.
That now edges out Street Fighter 2 on the Super Nintendo's 6.3 million units, which held that record for basically 30 years.
It is of course important to point out, however, that only counts what Capcom shows for individual releases where as previous Street Fighter entries were broken up into separate titles (Super Street Fighter 4, Ultra Street Fighter 4, etc.).
Taking that into account, Street Fighter 5 still sits far behind Street Fighter 2's 15+ million copies as well as Street Fighter 4's 9 million or so — and it probably won't catch up to them at this rate.
What is fairly impressive though is SF5 was still able to sell 400,000 more units over just the second quarter of the year. That's the most we've seen in a while, and again, that's for a game over 6 years old.
Considering there's no more substantial content coming to SF5, many of these sales were likely connected to the growing hype surrounding Street Fighter 6 after its initial reveals.
Over that same period, the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection sold another 200,000 copies, putting it to 2.4 million units lifetime.
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3's re-release has also now eclipsed the original UMVC3 as well as Marvel vs. Capcom too by reaching 1.4 million copies.
Unfortunately, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite cannot say the same, however, since it's still sitting at 1.9 million units of the abandoned title.
It's going to be very interesting to see what kind of momentum Capcom has over the remaining quarters of the year as the anticipation for SF6 continues to grow and if SF5 will continue to sell strongly before riding off into the sunset.
