This one image brings back painful memories about Smash 4 and serves as a reminder why Smash Ultimate is so much better...

With some of the concerns being vocalized within the Smash community about Steve and, to a lesser extent, Kazuya, it's easy to forget what we have with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. More than that, Super Smash Con 2022 reminds of what the Smash series used to be with Super Smash Bros. 4.

The Super Smash Bros. 4 event at Super Smash Con 2022 has already concluded. As such, an image highlighted by Liquid|Hungrybox depicts the top 8 performing players at the event. Even though it's been nearly four years since most of us dropped Smash 4 in favor of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the image speaks a lot about Smash 4's meta.

Of the top 8 players at the tournament, five of them used Bayonetta. In fact, first, second, and third place finishers were Mistake, Tyroy, and Reflection, all Bayonetta users.

Notably, there were also players that made it into top 8 using Cloud and Diddy Kong, two other fighters that were typically recognized as top tiers throughout Smash 4's lifespan. Finally, there's Elegant who demonstrated that he hasn't lost his touch with the green plumber in Smash 4.

What's funny about this is the fact that Bayonetta was actually nerfed to her current incarnation. Considering what Masahiro Sakurai has revealed about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's development, Bayonetta was such a problem in Smash 4 that the developers actually went out of their way to create a patch that specifically toned her down while they were in the midst of working on Smash Ultimate.

Although Bayonetta's ability to rack up tons of damage and even occasionally perform touch of death combos in Ultimate, it's a real far cry compared to what she was capable of in Smash 4. Needless to say, the "controversy" of Smash 4 Bayonetta is pretty on par with Brawl's Meta Knight, though it's worth noting that more Bayonetta players placed in top 8 of Super Smash Con 2022's Smash 4 event than Meta Knight for Brawl.

For me, it feels like no other character in Smash Ultimate comes close to the nonsense that Bayonetta (and Cloud) were in Smash 4. Just seeing this image reminds me of one of the many reasons why I think Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a much better game.
