Frozen Ed Boon? Raiden vs. Thor? Digital artist has fun with original Mortal Kombat characters
Violent and gory as it is, Mortal Kombat has always had a lighthearted side as its creators have prioritized making us smile just a little more than making us turn our heads away in disgust.
Evgeny Yurichev, a digital artist from Novokuznetsk, Russia, does a wonderful job of capturing the fun amid the violence in his homage artwork to the very first Mortal Kombat game.
We've rounded up a handful of his creations in a gallery to share with you today as we see MK1 Johnny Cage deliver his trademark nut punch to an opponent with just the biggest grin on his face.
It took us a moment to realize the collection of frozen victims in the Sub-Zero image are actually the likes of Ed Boon, Dan Forden, John Tobias, and other Mortal Kombat developers, but Dan's toasty (maybe it's "frosty" for this one) face gives it away.
There are a few guest figures whom can also take an extra moment or two to see. Raiden is staring down a formidable foe, but a closer look reveals that it's Marvel's Thor.
It's always interesting to see like-powered characters clash in fantasy duels, and though these two did take on one another in a Death Battle a few years back, we wouldn't mind seeing them go another electrifying round or two.
In yet another image Mortal Kombat 1 Liu Kang blasts a fireball at a similarly positioned opponent, and it looks as though this might be Iron Fist (also from Marvel, and we'd definitely forgive you if you thought this was Electro at first).
Give the gallery a look through and let us know if it made you smile in the comments afterwards.
