Capcom's classic fighting game and the grandparent of the genre as we know it now, Street Fighter 2, has seen countless different versions and releases on just about every platform you can think of. However, we have never seen the world warriors make their way onto the original Nintendo Entertainment System.

Thanks to the team effort of several folks, we can now see what that idea could have been like if it were fully realized. A rom hack that ports Street Fighter 2 onto the NES is being developed, and from what we've seen so far, it looks fantastic.

Referred to as "Street Fighter 2 Deluxe NES," the project was helmed by a user over on romhacking named sebastianangel. This rom hack was started as a passion project, and based on the thread it looks as though it has been in the works for just about a year now.

Many talented people have contributed to the NES-style title, and one such person goes by the name of Fox Cunning. Their contribution comes in the form of music and sound drivers, and over on Twitter they shared a great clip of the game that gives us a look at what it's all about.

There is a full blown 8-bit character select screen complete with the classic music and world map. We get to see the versus slide pop up as well, and the portraits look like they were pulled straight from an NES cartridge.

As far as the gameplay itself, things appear to run quite smoothly and really capture the look and feel of an old Nintendo game. According to Fox Cunning, this rom hack even uses the same mapper chip as Castlevania 3, which means that it could actually be put into a legit NES cartridge and played on the original hardware.

The hack isn't finished yet, but we can't wait to see the final result. For more info on Street Fighter 2 Deluxe NES, be sure to head over to the thread.
