Fans around the world were hoping to see the big reveal of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's final DLC character during today's Nintendo Direct presentation, but instead, everyone was hit with a bit of a curveball.

Nintendo revealed that series director Masahiro Sakurai will be revealing the last entrant into the historic Smash Ultimate roster next month in its own, separate event.

The final Mr. Sakurai Presents for the landmark crossover fighter will be taking place on October 5 starting at 7 a.m. PT / 10 a.m. ET.

Unlike almost all other previously released Smash characters in the game, Nintendo will apparently be including both the reveal trailer and breakdown at the same time, so players will immediately get to learn how the last DLC member operates as well as their history.

Things may be a bit bittersweet now that it's finally starting to set in, but Nintendo's Yoshiaki Koizumi re-affirmed that the 87th character will indeed mark the end of Smash Ultimate's development.

"It has been about three years since the game has been released," said Koizumi in the Direct. "This will be the last presentation about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate."

The last video we'll be seeing of Sakurai sitting behind his desk to explain the fighter and their series of origin will apparently last around 40 minutes in total according to Nintendo's follow-up post on the matter.

Those looking for any teases or hints in this announcement of an announcement or on Sakurai's Twitter right now will be a bit disappointed since there's seemingly nothing to really read into with the image itself just being the flaming Smash logo from the game's initial reveal in 2018.

Nintendo's Twitter post also confirms that the release date of our ultimate warrior will be revealed by Sakurai as well as a final round of Mii Fighter costumes.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate first released in December of 2018 where it managed to bring back every single returning fighter from previous entries in the series alongside more highly requested newcomers like Ridley, King K. Rool and Simon Belmont.

The arguably biggest crossover in video games blew up harder than all other Smash titles and quickly usurped Street Fighter 2's throne as the best selling fighting game of all time.

Ultimate currently sits at nearly 25 million copies sold worldwide over SF2's estimated 15 million, and it's continued to see support regularly up to this point.

The first Fighter Pass featured five additional DLC characters with Persona 5's Joker, Dragon Quest's Hero, Banjo-Kazooie, Fatal Fury's Terry Bogard and Fire Emblem's Byleth.

A second Fighter Pass began production in 2020 with five more characters being released since between ARMS' Min-Min, Minecraft's Steve, Final Fantasy 7's Sephiroth, Xenoblade Chronicles 2's Pyra/Mythra and Tekken's Kazuya Mishima.

Who left can stack up to the competition already brought to the table? I guess we'll be finding out in a few weeks.
