Some of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe's Heroic Brutalities were so comically bad they were actually awesome

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was an interesting experiment. What was meant to be an epic clash between two iconic franchises ended up being a 3D fighter with an identity crisis that tried to capture that bloody Mortal Kombat magic all while obeying a Teen rating and retaining the good name of several fan favorite super heroes.

It was an awkward meeting in the middle of both IPs, but while the game certainly wasn't all bad, it did have several Fatality-style finishers that were... far from great. As I think back, some of them were so comically bad and cheesy that they are actually really awesome and entertaining.

What jolted my memory on MK vs. DC's Heroic Brutalities was a tweet this morning from PND|Mustard. A clip of the commentator / prominent NRS community member performing one of Green Lantern's "brutalities" accompanied the tweet, and it's hilariously bad.

With this finisher, Green Lantern captures his opponent in a green orb of energy, lifts them up into the air, then crushes them down into a small ball before dropping them to the ground. The foe slowly unravels on the ground until they're just... lying there, and the hero stands there in celebration of the great ending to his tough battle.

Mustard's reaction to the finisher really does sum it up well. Several of these Heroic Brutalities feel like something bigger is supposed to happen, but it never does and the move just fizzles out.

Moreover, some Heroic Brutalities are just plain ridiculous โ€“ even by the over the top standards the Mortal Kombat series has been known and loved for for almost 30 years now.

Take one of Batman's Heroic Brutalities, for example. The caped crusader chucks a Batarang directly at the opponent's gut that is very clearly on the path to impaling them. At the very last second, however โ€” in order to preserve the T rating โ€” the projectile lands flat on its target's belly, sitting almost like a belt buckle.

The Batarang goes off and sends out a signal to summon a swarm of bats that fly in and terrorize the opponent, leaving them panicked in the fetal position. It's like something out of a B movie, and honestly, I love it.

Or take Wonder Woman's lasso finisher where she loops her rope around the opponent, tightens it, then spins them around like a cartoon until they bury into the ground and get stuck.

Slamming the opponent into the ground so that their legs are left sticking out and slowly kicking, two sledgehammers smashing the foe on either side, and even several bonks on the head are just some of the other things you'll see with these finishers here.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe may not be a hallmark in the Mortal Kombat series. It's not the most beloved, competitive, or revisited title in the Midway/NetherRealm Studios library, but what it is is an interesting snapshot in time with some hilariously bad (but awesome) finishers.
