Alleged character select screen of Warner Bros. platform fighting game leaks online

Rumors began to swirl around the internet this week that Warner Bros. is currently developing their own crossover platform fighting game in the same vein as Super Smash Bros.

Now, an alleged screenshot of the title, which may be called Multiversus, has appeared online reportedly showing part of the character select screen.

The screenshot, which has since been removed due to copyright takedowns, was shared online by professional Smash player Juan 'Liquid|Hungrybox' Debiedma and others that included 13 characters spread across WB-owned properties.

Shaggy (Scooby-Doo), Finn (Adventure Time), Jake the Dog (Adventure Time), Batman, Harley Quinn, Superman, Wonder Woman, Steven Universe, Gandalf (Lord of the Rings), Rick (Rick & Morty), Bugs Bunny (Looney Tunes), and Tom & Jerry appear on the supposed select screen alongside what appears to be a brand new fighter.

The character renders appear to have a colorful and cartoony look to them, but that's not all the image seems to reveal.

Different fighting style icons are included in the top right corner for each character with Shaggy being a close-combat fighter, Bugs looking to be more ranged and Wonder Woman as defensive.

Numbers in the bottom left imply the game may also feature a level up system of some sort.

Interestingly, all of the characters included are pulled from various TV shows, comics and novels, but there are no fighters originating from other video games.

So Mortal Kombat's Scorpion and Sub-Zero may not be a given, though it's hard to imagine them missing the cut of a WB fighting game.

Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb, who previously corroborated the platform fighter's existence, released a video sharing details about Warner Bros. Multiversus, which has also been taken down.

Industry insider Nibel summarized the content of said video, however, and posted the game could be a free-to-play title, Grubb's source says "it looks cheap," there will be DLC characters, and NBA player LeBron James could even be one of those additional fighters because of his starring role in Space Jam: A New Legacy.

The initial rumors suggested Fred Flintstone, Mad Max, Harry Potter and Johnny Bravo may also be part of the roster.

Shortly thereafter, a new trademark filed by Warner Bros. was discovered for a video game project called Multiversus and certainly seems to be the perfect name for a title like the one alleged.

These are all still rumors we should take with a grain of salt, but the fact that images and videos are being taken down certainly lend credence to their authenticity.

If Multiversus is indeed coming, it appears to be poising itself to capitalize on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate no longer receiving new DLC following the release of Kingdom Hearts' Sora.

The game would now have to also contend, however, with Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl as well as other previously established platform fighters like Rivals of Aether and Brawlhalla on top of Smash Ultimate's continued popularity.

It is interesting to think that something like a video game version of what Space Jam did in films could soon be on the horizon though we'll all need to wait and see how this is potentially going to play out in a constantly growing sub-genre of fighting games.
