Rumor: Warner Bros. reportedly developing their own Super Smash Bros.-like fighting game potentially titled Multiversus

So Super Smash Warner Bros.?

The world of platform fighting games has been expanding far beyond Super Smash Bros. for a number of years now, and another company may be looking to throw their hat into the ring too in the not too distant future.

An alleged leaker on Reddit claims Warner Bros. and potentially NetherRealm Studios are currently developing their own crossover fighter featuring WB's biggest properties, which may be titled Multiversus.

The leak posted to r/GamingLeaksAndRumors states NRS' next title is a platform fighting game based on Smash Bros with a bit of a different twist.

This game is supposedly based around a tag team mechanic although the leaker says they are unsure if characters come in pre-selected pairs or if there can be custom teams.

Interestingly, they name off close to a dozen fighters that are said to be confirmed with Shaggy (Scooby-Doo), Gandalf (Lord of the Rings), Tom & Jerry, Batman, Fred Flintstone, Mad Max, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Johnny Bravo making the cut.

There are no Mortal Kombat characters listed, however, but at least Scorpion and Sub-Zero would have to be shoe-ins if this project is indeed real.

Following the initial leak, a new trademark was discovered that was filed at the end of September by Warner Bros. for a title called Multiversus.

All we know from the trademark is Multiversus is indeed supposed to be a video game of some sort, which the leaker claims they didn't even know about when they initially made their post, so they're unsure if that's the actual title or not.

Gaming leaks that are posted to that Subreddit are generally deleted if the poster cannot substantiate their claim to moderators, yet this WB title is still up, which lends credence to its potential authenticity.

Moreover, industry insider and journalist Jeff Grubb corroborates that the WB platform fighter is real, but it is not actually being developed by NetherRealm.

Even if this is the case, it would certainly make sense that NRS would be involved in some fashion given that fighting games are their area of expertise and their Mortal Kombat characters would probably be in the mix.

There are already a handful of rumors alleging what NetherRealm is working on next including a game based on Marvel Comics, another Mortal Kombat and most recently before this Injustice 3, so suffice to say we don't really know what's going on over there.

Although all this still just amounts to rumors on the internet, it's certainly not hard to imagine WB going down this route considering how much they seem to love crossovers.

Just look at Space Jam 2, all of those straight-to-DVD Scooby-Doo features, and the guest characters of Mortal Kombat and Injustice for some easy examples.

Funnily enough, the leaker claims this project began due to the memes of Ultra Instinct Shaggy and people requesting him for Mortal Kombat, so the internet may get their wish of seeing him battle Scorpion after all — which we kinda already got in movie form not too long ago.

For now though, all we can really do is sit back and wait and see what Warner Bros. and potentially NetherRealm are cooking up behind the scenes.
