The King of Fighters '98 remains one of the most beloved entries in the 27-year-old franchise as well as fighting games in general, and it's going to be even better really soon.

SNK is launching the official community beta test for KOF98: Ultimate Match Final Edition later tonight, which adds rollback netcode to the title a few months before its full rollout.

Steam users can begin playing the updated version of the game at 6 p.m. PDT and will run through Friday, October 29, at 6 p.m. PDT.

Those who don't currently own Ultimate Match will be able to pick it up for cheap too, as SNK is set to mark it down to half price during the beta's duration — so it'll only cost $7.50 if you live in the United States.

There's currently no detailed instructions for accessing the limited test once it goes live, but it'll assumedly work the same as other Steam betas.

Players will need to go into their Steam settings and turn on beta participation to select the test build upon trying to launch the game.

Code Mystics are the developers working to implement rollback into KOF98, and their track record is a good one with doing the same for other SNK fighters like King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match and The Last Blade 2.

The full update that'll include the new netcode for all users is set to launch sometime this winter, but it will not apply to any console versions of KOF98 currently.

Final Edition is a 2014 revamp of the 2008 Ultimate Match, so players have access to a wide variety of modes and features including the Ultimate Mode and a balance update.

Now get your teams ready to fight across new states, countries and maybe even continents.
