Rumor: New Killer Instinct entry reportedly in the works at Microsoft
Who could be making it though is anyone's guess
The Killer Instinct community continues to be one of the most vocal in the FGC for their desire to see another entry in the series, and they could be getting their wish fulfilled sometime in the near-ish future.
A new rumor is reporting that a brand new Killer Instinct title is currently in active development over at Microsoft.
The report comes via Shpeshal_Nick on the XboxEra podcast, who claims to have insider information on the project's existence.
"What I've been told is that yes, Killer Instinct is in active development," said Nick on the most recent podcast. "It's not just 'coming back.' It's in active development at the moment."
He states he first heard rumblings about KI not being dead last year, but didn't want to say anything at the time because he needed more direct confirmation before putting the name out there in the public space.
As for who is developing the alleged fighting game, Nick doesn't know and is actively trying to find that out though he says he's pretty sure it's not Iron Galaxy, who took over development after Double Helix's Amazon acquisition.
"For anyone asking me, I don't know the studio," said Nick. "I haven't been told. I'm legitimately trying to find out the studio because I'm pretty I'm pretty sure it's not Iron Galaxy."
At the start of 2020, Adam 'Keits' Heart stated that Iron Galaxy is hard at work on a new project, but that it is not in fact KI.
Flash forward a bit to June this year and Phil Spencer, head of the Xbox division, was directly asked about a new Killer Instinct where he essentially relayed that Microsoft would like to do a new entry though they needed to find the right partner first.
"It is about finding the right team and the right opportunity, but it is not due to any kind of lack of desire on our part that we're not doing more with KI, because we love the franchise and the community response," said Spencer.
After being dormant for 17 years, Killer Instinct received its revival as a launch title for the Xbox One in 2013 where it continued to see three seasons of DLC until 2016.
Without more conclusive information, it's important to remember that this is still just a rumor at this point, so take the talk of KI with a big grain of salt until more is potentially revealed.
