Ed Boon continues to poke fun at fans who want Shaggy as a Mortal Kombat guest

During the peak of the meme's popularity, over 380,000 people signed a petition to make Shaggy from the Scooby-Doo franchise into a Mortal Kombat guest character, and in some ways the campaign eventually succeeded.

Mortal Kombat Co-creator Ed Boon has never seemed very enthusiastic about the prospect of adding the cowardly investigator to his fighting games, and he's still apparently cracking jokes about fans asking him for Shaggy.

The iconic game developer and wisecracker recently shared a poignant comic strip, which he says "pretty much kills any chances of Shaggy as a guest."

Zack Morrissette's comic depicts the Scooby-Doo gang having somehow managed to catch and tie up Scorpion for the big reveal of who's behind the MK mystery.

But of course it's just the ninja's skull that's under the mask to which he then performs his classic fire breath Fatality on poor ol' Fred.

Back before Mortal Kombat 11 was even available, Boon had told a fan asking him on Twitter for Shaggy "let me know how that works out for you..."

It would take over two years afterwards, but the internet would arguably end up with the last laugh in a way.

Warner Bros. Animation actually added a quick gag to the opening of Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms where 'Ultra Instinct Shaggy' pops out and steals Scorpion's catchphrase.

That likely would have never made it in without approval from Ed Boon and / or NetherRealm Studios first, so they don't seem to be truly against the joke in that regard.

Nobody should go into Mortal Kombat 12 expecting to see Shaggy as a legitimate fighter of course, but at this rate, maybe we'll end up with a variation, achievement or a suspicious skeleton in the Krypt as a cheeky reference.

That is unless the meme is completely forgotten by that point though this is the internet, so I'm sure at least one person will never stop asking Boon now.
