Keanu Reeves is against Neo or John Wick appearing as guests in Mortal Kombat

NetherRealm Studios' Mortal Kombat and Injustice titles are well known for adding a number of guest character via DLC. Keanu Reeves recently sat down for an interview with Esquire and was asked many questions about his career. One of the questions asked Reeves how he'd feel about a character with his likeness appearing as a guest in Mortal Kombat.

"Fans have been dying for Neo or John Wick to appear in a Mortal Kombat game. If it were up to you, would you allow it to happen?" asked Esquire. Notably, Keanu Reeves cracked a chuckle as he was reading the question.

"If it was up to me? No!" responded Reeves almost immediately. "Mortal Kombat is awesome in so many ways. But I think, you know, Neo and John Wick... yeah man, they're doing their own thing. Mortal Kombat is doing their own thing."

And that was everything Keanu Reeves had to say on the subject. He didn't specifically state why he wouldn't want Neo and John Wick to be playable in a Mortal Kombat title.

One seemingly obvious possibility to Reeves' hesitation is the violent nature of these games. While it's true that the Matrix and John Wick movie series have their own levels of violence in them, Mortal Kombat really takes things to a different level with the beheadings, disembowelment and other grotesque ways fighters are killed off using the series staple Fatality and Brutality mechanics.

It's one thing for a character like Neo or John Wick to inflict this type of damage to other characters, but it'd be an entirely different thing for them to suffer this kind of fate. Reeves might not be willing to see himself killed off in such violent manners.

What's interesting is that Neo was actually once considered for Mortal Kombat 9 according to Ed Boon (source: Game Informer). In some ways, the crossover could've made sense considering that Warner Bros. owns the right to the Matrix series. Ultimately though, Neo would not become a character in Mortal Kombat 9.

"I remember they brought up Neo," said Boon after mentioning that NetherRealm Studios had asked Warner Bros. about including guest characters as DLC. "So there were a whole bunch of ones that for business reasons or that creatively we didn’t think they'd fit."

However, this wasn't necessarily the complete end of the idea of having Neo join as a guest character for a NetherRealm Studios title. During Game Informer's 166 rapid-fire question interview with Ed Boon about Mortal Kombat 11, it was mentioned that Neo almost became a combatant in Injustice 2.

"There was a pretty close chance that Neo was going to be in Injustice 2, but that fell through," stated Boon. No details have ever been revealed why things didn't pan out for Neo to become playable in Injustice 2.

It's also worth mentioning that Constantine was also considered for Injustice 2. Though Keanu Reeves played the role of Constantine in the movie, the character wouldn't necessarily have to be in Reeves' likeness.

Of course, Keanu Reeves might not necessarily have a say on whether or not Neo and John Wick get represented this way in a NetherRealm Studios title. For now though, the crossover doesn't seem to be in the cards, unless plans are already being made for NetherRealm Studios' next project.
