Masahiro Sakurai: Two fighters remain for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and the game will be finalized with their release

There are only two characters waiting to be revealed for the Fighters Pass Vol. 2. With E3 2021 approaching in early June, it's expected that at least one of these two characters will be unveiled at the event.

Masahiro Sakurai recently wrote in Famitsu Column 629 that the Fighters Pass Vol. 2's last two remaining combatants will be the last DLC characters for the game. Translations of what was written by Sakurai have been provided by Kody Nokolo and Robert Sephazon.

"In keeping with the theme of the column, Sakurai continues, he believes this is an opportunity to make one more announcement: when all Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC is released, the game will be finalized, and he believes this will be quite soon," said Sephazon in regards to what is written by Sakurai.

"Sakurai says that while we wait, he can say definitively there are only two fighters remaining," continued Sephazon. "They will both be released this year."

Notably, Sakurai has implied in the past that the "continuous development" that has gone on since Super Smash Bros. 4 is slated to end after the release of remaining challengers for the Fighters Pass Vol. 2.

Following the reveal of Pyra & Mythra as part of Challenger Pack 9, Sakurai reaffirmed that there are only two fighters left to be released. "Only two more DLC fighters remain," declared Sakurai back then. "That means that there are only two more opportunities to bring you videos like this."

Though many fans were hopeful for some sort of bonus character or "Fighters Pass Vol. 3," this scenario is looking to be less and less likely. It doesn't feel like Sakurai is simply stretching the truth with the intention of revealing one more big surprise for the fans at this point.

When the Fighters Pass Vol. 2 was first unveiled, fans were told right from the get-go that the DLC pass was scheduled to be complete by December 31, 2021. Despite complications with the COVID-19 global pandemic, it seems that Masahiro Sakurai and the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate development team will be able to finish the DLC before the end of the year.
