Is Ed Boon teasing NetherRealm Studios' development with Marvel or is he just having fun with rumors?
We recently caught word of some rumors that suggest that NetherRealm Studios might be working on a game involving Marvel Comics. This could be something like a Marvel Comics fighting game. It could even be a Marvel Comics vs. DC fighter.
Ed Boon of NetherRealm Studios appeared to give this rumor some credibility with Tweets that seemingly teased at this possibility. Earlier today, he once again mentioned a game concept involving Marvel Comics.
"Inspiration for our upcoming 'Marvel v Mortal Kombat' game," said Boon on Twitter. Notably, this message was made complete with a winking emoji that developers have been known for in the past few years.
In the Tweet itself, a small clip depicting a live-action fight scene between Marvel's Spider-Man and Mortal Kombat's Jax was shown. It really did seem like something one might expect from a Marvel vs. Mortal Kombat fighting game.
Notably, Midway Games (before they became NetherRealm Studios) did release Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe back in 2008. Though the game's reception was mostly average, it's existence does suggest that NetherRealm Studios could potentially handle a fighting game involving Marvel's characters.
Despite Ed Boon mentioning an "upcoming Marvel v Mortal Kombat title," this is likely a joke. If NetherRealm Studios is truly developing a fighting game with Marvel Comics characters, it's unlikely that Mortal Kombat characters would be involved.
It's pretty difficult to have a crossover fighting game involving Mortal Kombat characters. Though Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is a good argument on how this could potentially work, that game notoriously toned down the Fatalities that Mortal Kombat is typically known for.
Still, Boon's mere mention of Marvel could indicate something like a Marvel fighting game that may or may not pit them against DC. Alternatively, Ed Boon could just be aware of the rumors and is just having fun by teasing fans about it.
Considering that Warner Bros. (NetherRealm's parent company) is confirmed to have announcements for E3 2021, we'll likely find out what's going on here in early June.
Inspiration for our upcoming “Marvel V Mortal Kombat” game. ;)
