Some think Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown's new graphics are worse than Final Shodown's, but what does a comparison show?

Today is the day Virtua Fighter fans have been waiting years for with the official reveal of Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown, and while many were simply happy to see one of their favorite series returning, others had some questions.

When looking through our own comments on Ultimate Showdown's announcement, we noticed quite a few people that seemed to think the game's new graphical engine and character models don't hold up to that of Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown, but what do the side-by-side comparisons show?

We were able to capture screenshots from Final Showdown through Yakuza: Like a Dragon's minigames on a PlayStation 4 Pro to get as close as we could to the new screens revealed for the updated port.

Once we put the two newest versions of VF5 next to each other, however, it quickly becomes clear that Ultimate Showdown is handily graphically superior title with improvements made to the textures details and lighting.

Sarah Bryant's clothing now actually looks like it's made out of leather with added seams next to the super shiny Final Showdown version.

While VF5's hair textures were fantastic when the game originally released 15 years ago, Ultimate Shodown's appears to have more details as well.

What may be throwing many people off is the new character models, and specifically their faces since some of them are looking quite different now — like Vanessa.

These changes are much more subjective, so it'll come down to the individual and how attached they were to the previous designs.

Ultimate Showdown uses Sega's Dragon Engine, which has mainly been used for the most recent Yakuza titles before now with some of that series' development team working on the new port as well.

We won't need to wait too much longer to get Ultimate Shodown in our hands, as the updated Virtua Fighter will be releasing on June 1 and is rumored to be a PlayStation Plus title for the month.
