Street Fighter 5's sales are now less than 1 million copies away from Street Fighter 2's almost 30-year-old record
At this rate, the transfer of power will happen before the end of the year
Street Fighter 5 crossed its fifth anniversary since the game's initial release earlier this year shortly after it also reached the 5-million sales mark and things are continuing to look good for the title.
Capcom recently updated their Platinum Titles page to reflect sales up to March 31, 2021 where it seems that SF5 is likely only months away from breaking Street Fighter 2's almost 30-year-old record.
The developer's flagship fighting game now sits at 5.5 million copies sold, which means SF5 managed to push an additional 300,000 units over the first three months of the year.
That might not sound like a ton, but it still managed to keep pace with some of Capcom's newer titles like Resident Evil 2 and Monster Hunter: World while also beating out Devil May Cry 5.
If Street Fighter 5 continues this pace of around 100,000 copies per month, the newest title in the franchise will surpass or at least reach its predecessor which took over the world by the end of the year.
Street Fighter 2 still stands as Capcom's single best-selling fighting game release at 6.3 million copies sold back in 1992, but it is of course worth pointing out that only includes the Super Nintendo release of the title.
Combined with ports to other consoles like the Sega Genesis and updated versions like Super Turbo, SF2's total home sales are more around the 15 million range, which no fighting game except Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been able to surpass since.
Outside of Smash Ultimate, SF5 is still trying to catch up to many of its other contemporary competition as well, as Tekken 7, Dragon Ball FighterZ and Mortal Kombat 11 have all sold well over 6 million at this point.
It'll be interesting to see if the new Season 5 content will help boost SF5's numbers in its twilight years or if we'll start seeing a plateau in the near future.
