Will Nintendo wait for E3 2021 to show the next character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Fighters Pass Vol. 2 or can we expect another before then?

Pyra & Mythra from Xenoblades Chronicles 2 recently became available in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as part of the Fighters Pass Vol. 2's Challenger Pack 9. At this point, there are only two characters left in Fighters Pass Vol. 2. Masahiro Sakurai has heavily implied that these next two characters will be the final ones for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

As such, the waiting period for the next reveal has once again begun. When can we expect this reveal to happen?

After Byleth was revealed, we had to wait 70 days just to learn that Fighters Pass Vol. 2's first challenger would hail from the ARMS series. We wouldn't be told that it was Min Min until another 88 days (158 days total) after that.

Needless to say, the COVID-19 global pandemic did have an impact on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's DLC development. There was a brief period of time in which the developers weren't able to work on the next fighter. This was because Nintendo wasn't fully prepared for remote work at the time.

Min Min ended up getting revealed on June 22, 2020, a couple of weeks after the cancelled E3 event that was also planned for that month. Many believe that Minecraft's Steve could've also been revealed in June 2020 if not for the novel coronavirus, but there's never been any official word confirming this.

Following Min Min, Steve would be the next challenger revealed on October 1, 2020. It ended up being a 101 day wait.

Though there wasn't an announcement for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at The Game Awards presentation for 2019, Sephiroth was shown off for the 2020 show. This came 70 days after Steve's unveiling.

69 days later, Pyra & Mythra would be revealed during the Nintendo Direct that played on February 17, 2021. On average, there's been a 99.5 day wait for Fighters Pass Vol. 2 characters since the last reveal.

Though E3 2020 was cancelled, there is a push for a digital E3 2021. This is scheduled to take place from June 15, 2021 and last until June 17, 2021.

As of right now, it's unconfirmed which companies will be participating in this scheduled E3 event in June. However, Nintendo has traditionally saved some big reveals for around this time of the year.

Considering that COVID-19 is still a thing in 2021, Nintendo might not be able to pump out two character reveals by June 15. Of course, there are 118 days between Pyra & Mythra's reveal and E3 2021. Nintendo is becoming noticeably faster with character announcements for Fighters Pass Vol. 2.

It's entirely possible that Nintendo could unveil something in April or May, and still have enough time to show something in the middle of June. Having said that, it is important to note that Fighters Pass Vol. 2 is scheduled to be completed before the end of December 2021, so Nintendo has plenty of time to spare if they only want to reveal one character in June.

Time will ultimately tell, but it feels like things can go in two different directions with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC. At the very least, it's very likely that a character is waiting for us no later than June.
