How likely is the 'Concert Leak' for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate now that Monster Hunter Mii costumes have been revealed?

Pyra & Mythra ended up being the characters to join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate via the Fighters Pass Vol. 2's Challenger Pack 9. Prior to their reveal, a post on 4chan — now known as the Concert Leak — was able to correctly predict that Challenger Pack 9 would be a Xenoblade Chronicles 2 rep. According to this "leak," Nintendo is planning a three-hour long orchestra in 2022 that will consist of songs that represent every character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, including fighters that have not yet been revealed.

While the correct, yet broad prediction of a Xenoblade Chronicles 2 rep gave the initial impression of this leak being possible or even likely, new information that surfaced during the "Sakurai Presents" video that showcased Pyra & Mythra now casts some new doubt on this rumor. One of the characters featured in this rumor has been possibly disconfirmed due to the return of a certain Mii costume.

This "Concert Leak" suggested that N. Sanity Beach and Proof of a Hero from the respective Crash Bandicoot and Monster Hunter franchises would be included in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate via the Challenger Pack 10 and Challenger Pack 11. This implied that Crash Banicoot and Monster Hunter would be next to join the roster, in exactly that order.

However, the Mii costumes revealed during Masahiro Sakurai's presentation were the Hunter Equipment (Monster Hunter), Rathalos Equipment (Monster Hunter), Felyne (Monster Hunter) and Arthur (Ghosts 'n Goblins) costume sets. Surprisingly, all the Mii costumes this time were for Capcom series. It was odd to see that there weren't any new Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Mii costumes for this batch.

"You may be wondering why there are more Capcom characters," said Masahiro Sakurai. "It's because Monster Hunter Rise is coming soon. You can also fight against a Rathalos in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that there's a new Ghosts 'n Goblins game coming out."

According to one of the infamous "fan rules," a character isn't going to become a DLC fighter if Mii costume parts were previously released as DLC to represent that character. In other words, the existence of the Hunter Equipment and Rathalos Equipment Mii costume sets "disconfirm" the Monster Hunter as future DLC.

Of course, it's already been proven that these fan rules are not always law for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The most notable example of a fan rule being broken was the one that suggested that characters already in the game as Spirits cannot become DLC fighters. If this were true, then Min Min and Pyra & Mythra would not be playable.

The fan rules that supposedly prevent DLC characters based on the available Assist Trophies and DLC Mii costume parts have both held strong, however. Having said that, Masahiro Sakurai at one point stated that Rex was intended to be the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 rep before it was ultimately decided that Pyra & Mythra would be joining instead.

But Rex's Mii costume was released during the era of the first Fighters Pass, not during Fighters Pass Vol. 2. The fact that Monster Hunter costume parts are being released before the end of the Fighters Pass Vol. 2 does greatly hurt the chances for a Monster Hunter rep in Fighters Pass Vol. 2 — or for the rest of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate if Sakurai is to be believed that there are only two challengers remaining.

The most telling sign on whether this leak is legit or not will depend on who is revealed next. If Crash Bandicoot really is the next combatant destined to join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, then Monster Hunter's chances will dramatically increase in the eyes of many. But even this would in no way be a guarantee that Monster Hunter would follow Crash Bandicoot.

Ultimately, we'll just have to wait until official word is heard from Nintendo. While this rumor's chances seem diminished now, there's still a slim chance that it is an actual leak. Fighters Pass Vol. 2 is scheduled to conclude by December 2021, so we'll likely know for sure by then.
