'We keep considering and reconsidering characters until we're down to the very last one every time' - Guilty Gear Strive developers

Guilty Gear Strive recently launched with a base roster of 15 characters consisting of Sol Badguy, Ky Kiske, May, Faust, Potemkin, Chipp Zanuff, Zato-1, Millia Rage, Axl Low, Anji Mito, I-No, Ramlethal Valentine, Leo Whitefang, Nagoriyuki and Giovanna.

In an interview with 4Gamer (which took place before Guilty Gear Strive's launch), Guilty Gear Strive Directors Daisuke Ishiwatari and Akira Katano were asked about Anji Mito's inclusion being that he hasn't been playable since Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R, a game originally released back in 2012-2013. This prompted the two directors to speak about the character selection process for Guilty Gear Strive.

"Anji Mito was just one of several candidates," said Ishiwatari. "It's the same with any game we make, but we keep considering and reconsidering characters until we're down to the very last one every time."

"Regarding Anji, we talked about how we should be bringing back a character who never made it into the Guilty Gear Xrd series, which eventually led to us landing on him, as I recall," chimed in Katano.

It's then noted how players tend to have more fun if there are more characters included in fighting games. Though Guilty Gear Strive only launched with 15 characters, we should probably expect this number to multiply over its lifetime via DLC.

The first 5 DLC characters will become available thanks to the Season Pass. In July 2021, the first DLC fighter will be a complete newcomer to the series. Following this, a veteran from a past Guilty Gear title will return in August 2021.

Not many details have been officially revealed about the remaining 3 DLC challengers. However, fans might already know who is coming to Guilty Gear next based on a potential data mine leak.

"I really want to bring out more characters," continued Ishiwatari. "In fighting games, the more characters you have, the more fun you have, right? In that sense, we want to offer more new characters to players as soon as possible."

"We do feel that we want to bring back all of the characters who've appeared in the series," stated Katano. "This is true for every game, but when people are still waiting for their favorite character we always want to apologize to them."

"We decided that we wanted every character from the original Guilty Gear to be in the game, so that took 9 slots right off the bat," said Ishiwatari. "The 6 characters after that were all difficult and we pondered our decisions a lot. I don't really know that any one out of those 6 was more difficult than the others."

Of the original 10 characters that appeared in the first Guilty Gear game, Kliff Undersn is notably absent. Perhaps he'll become a DLC fighter sometime during or after the first Season Pass.

"We felt that for the people who started playing with Guilty Gear Xrd, we needed a representative character for them in the starting roster which would either be Ramlethal or Elphelt," said Katano about including Leo Whitefang and Ramlethal Valentine in Guilty Gear Strive. "We ended up picking Ramlethal between the two."

"For fans of Guilty Gear Xrd, we didn't want it to just be a completely different thing but to include a character they properly recognize," added Ishiwatari. "Honestly, we didn't really have much trouble deciding on Leo. That's because I wanted him in, too."
