NetherRealm Studios is back working on new motion capture recordings but is it for Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate or something else?

And why is Kenny there?

Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate recently just crossed its two year anniversary since it was fully unveiled to the world, and it seems that those who made the game are back at work doing something intriguing.

NetherRealm Studios' Senior Animator Andy Senesac recently shared a post that indicates his team is back in the motion capture studio for the first time in a long while, but what are they working on?

Senesac is wearing an MK11 t-shirt in his studio selfie, but to be fair he did work on the game obviously.

The latest edition of Mortal Kombat hasn't really seen much at all in the way of new kontent since Ultimate launched in November 2020 alongside the awesome Klassic Movie Skins Pack, which has had fans wondering how much support the fighting game will see going forward.

There's certainly plenty of rumors circulating around about future Kombat Packs after Rain, Rambo and Mileena, but there's something else that's perhaps just as interesting and certainly more confusing.

Kenny 'Unrooolie' O'Brien from the YoVideogames crew responded to Senesac's tweet with his own pictures in seemingly the same studio saying that he "had a blast" and "can't wait to see how it turns out."

What's extra eye-catching is that Kenny's second photo appears to be specifically of the facial capture studio, which has some fans clamoring and wondering if the MK mega fan could end up as the human face of Cyrax should he return or potentially something else.

Even outside of the aforementioned Movie skins which brought back in the actors from the original film, we've already seen something similar with the special Dimitri Vegas costume that used the DJ's face and voice after MK11's initial launch.

To add another layer to this kasserole, Alex Bittner, a facial animator at NRS, stated that Rain was the last model they captured in-studio before everything shut down from the coronavirus pandemic.

This left Mileena to re-use her sister Kitana's already-captured model which was obviously modified to add her sharper features.

Rambo, meanwhile, had to be completely created from scratch according to Bittner, which means this is probably the first new facial capture work they've been able to do for almost a year now.

Back in August 2020, series co-creator Ed Boon said that the team was "not even klose" to being done with Mortal Kombat 11 after previously stating that they'd be supporting the game longer than any of their previous releases.

With all of this evidence, there's probably more content in the works for Mortal Kombat 11 right now. If they're just starting on motion capture now for whatever it is, however, we might be waiting a good bit longer before they show it off.

It just better not be Mokap.
