Mario now has an official Super Saiyan transformation... sort of

Calling him Super Mario might get a little confusing though

Nintendo has given Mario a vast number of transformations over the past 35 plus years though his latest stands out a good bit more than most of the rest for some obvious reasons.

The developer released a new trailer for the upcoming Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury game and expansion this morning which closes off with Mario picking up a new item that makes his cat form look just like a Super Saiyan from Dragon Ball Z.

A gigantic version of the Super Bell item makes Cat Mario grow in size like the Mega Mushroom, but on top of that, it makes his yellow fur elongate into spiky hair that appears to be glowing and giving off particle effects.

Nintendo will probably never admit that the new transformation is an homage to Dragon Ball though it's kinda impossible not to see just by glancing at the design.

While there doesn't seem to be an official name for either the item or transformation, Mario naming conventions suggest they'll probably be called the Mega Bell and Mega Cat forms.

There is one very important detail that was not revealed in the trailer, which is what are Luigi, Peach, Rosalina, Toad and Toadette going to look like after grabbing the bell.

Will they also turn golden and grow out their hair, or will they keep their original colors with other variations?

Super Saiyan homages are certainly nothing new in pop culture and media though perhaps the most notable in the gaming industry comes from Mario's biggest crossover rival Sonic the Hedgehog.

Super Sonic first appeared all of the way back in Sonic 2 and makes the speedy animal's hair spike up and turn yellow while also giving him the ability to fly — though the creators try and deny the connection.

The transformation has appeared in the Super Smash Bros. series going back to Brawl as Sonic's Final Smash.

While they have no playable presence in Smash at the moment, the prospect of adding Cat Mario or variants of the other characters could certainly change that in a future installment considering the differences in their moves and abilities compared to the normal powers — so there's a chance this Super Saiyan-like form may be featured in the fighter in the future..

The Super Saiyan form is one of the most recognizable in all of contemporary media though its origins lie partly in time saving measures to help the Dragon Ball manga team from needing to color in Goku's black hair in every panel according to series creator Akira Toriyama.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury is a new re-release of the classic Wii U game with a newly added expansion that has Mario and Bowser Jr. team up to take on a bigger and badder version of the villain who's lost his mind to the power.

The game will release on Nintendo Switch next month on February 12, 2021.
