Rumor: Nintendo Direct could be incoming here in January if Nintendo website updates are an indicator

According to Porkydickson on Reddit (via Nintendo Life), the Nintendo Direct archive has seen numerous updates over the last week or so. Fans are beginning to speculate that a Nintendo Direct might be happening sometime in January to kick 2021 off for Nintendo enthusiasts.

Looking backwards, there's always been a Nintendo Direct of some kind — whether it was a standard Direct that showcased multiple games or focused solely on one game — in January since 2013, with 2016 being the sole exception.

The Nintendo Direct archive has supposedly seen multiple updates since last week. Of course, this could be another case of fans looking too deeply into things as the updates could just be a standard routine for the website.

While the COVID-19 global pandemic has certainly had a negative effect on the game development industry in 2020 (among other things), Japan might be slowly transitioning back to some form of normalcy with precautions if the recent "Mr. Sakurai Presents 'Sephiroth'" presentation is any indicator.

With Steve and Min Min, their breakdowns were provided directly from Masahiro Sakurai's own home. Sakurai noted how he was able to do the Sephiroth presentation this time from a studio again, but social distancing is still being practiced.

Though we just got access to Sephiroth in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate recently in December, the possibility of a new challenger getting revealed so soon could be in the cards.

The Byleth, Terry Bogard and Banjo-Kazooie amiibo are scheduled to be released on March 26. Historically, we have seen new characters get released in time with new amiibo so they can be bundled together in a patch for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Of course, it's worth keeping in mind that fans do have a history of seeing patterns for Nintendo's plans that don't actually exist. We'll just have to wait and see what announcements could be coming our way.
