Problems with the custom variation system in Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate highlighted by MK Tom Brady show how things can be rebalanced
When Mortal Kombat 11 was first released, the custom variation system was originally intended by NetherRealm Studios to be separate from competitive modes and events. However, the implementation of competitive custom variations became one of the most requested features from fans of various skill levels. Eventually, NetherRealm Studios responded to the request by making it into a reality.
There's been this growing concern circulating that custom variations are causing problems for the game's balance. Recently, UA|MK Tom Brady released a video that highlights a problem with this system and explains why it could potentially be breaking Mortal Kombat 11.
MK Tom Brady theorizes that no real rhyme or reason went into the costs of variation moves. Each character is armed with three slots, but moves can require one, two or three slots to be used.
Ironically, some of the best moves in the game only require one variation slot. Examples of high quality specials tied to the variation system include Jacqui Briggs' Bionic Bounce and Cetrion's H2 P0rt. Both of these examples only require one slot, leaving room for other great one-slot moves.
Certain moves that require two slots can be seen as inferior choices. In any event, players are effectively discouraged from experimenting with more costly options.
Perhaps a reassignment of costs could do a lot to rebalance Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate. Check out the video below to get MK Tom Brady's thoughts on the matter:
