Hungrybox shares his 2021 Super Smash Bros. Melee tier list, updated for the era of online play

Arguably the top Super Smash Bros. Melee player in the world, Juan "Liquid|Hungrybox" Debiedma, has put together a tier list for the GameCube title here in its 20th anniversary year.

While Melee has seen some alterations in perceived character strength in more recent times, this unchanging title has widely been "figured out" to a conclusive degree. That said, competitors are now taking the fight online, and certain characters might see certain advantages when under the cover of sporadic lag.

Debiedma separates the 26-character roster (Sheik and Zelda are treated as separate entities) into eight different categories, and also takes care to order them from left to right within the eight rows.

Multiple times during his video does Debiedma refer to the number one player in all of online Melee: GG|Zain. Zain is known for being perhaps the best Marth on the planet right now but has been turning heads with his Roy, a character who is extremely similar to Marth save for some subtle nuances, but who is regarded as immensely worse than his Fire Emblem counterpart in competitive play.

Zain's performances with Roy in 2020 online events have been enough to begin to call the community's traditional thoughts on the character into question, and this nods directly to the most enticing aspect of this tier list: the online factor.
